"Shani Jayanti: The Night Lord Shani Descends to Balance Karma and Justice"

Shani Jayanti, a propitious day dedicated to the God of Justice in Hindu Shastras- Lord Shani, falls on the Amavasya tithi (new moon day) during Krishna Paksha in Vaishakh. As per the Gregorian calendar, it lies in May or June. This year, we commemorate this very divine occasion of Shani Jayanti on the 27th of May 2025.

As per “Drik Panchang”, the “tithi” for “Shani Jayanti” in 2025 is as follows:

  • Shani Jayanti on Tuesday, May 27, 2025
  • Amavasya Tithi Begins - 12:11 PM on May 26, 2025
  • Amavasya Tithi Ends - 08:31 AM on May 27, 2025

As Lord Shani was born on this day, his birth anniversary is celebrated as 'Shani Jayanti.' It is also known by the names 'Shri Shanaishchara Janma Diwas' & 'Shani Amavasya.'

Significance of “Shani Jayanti” in Astrology

The name "Shani" has been derived from a Sanskrit word "Shanaishchara", which means 'slow mover.' Here, 'Shanai' (pronounced as 'Shani') refers to the planet Saturn & 'chara' stands for 'movement.' Hence, the Vedic astrology believes that the sixth planet (from the sun) of the solar system- 'Saturn' is related to Lord Shani. Saturn takes 30 years to complete one rotation around the Sun. That's why it is considered that the effects of the planet Saturn are slow and last for a longer period in a person's horoscope.

Astrology considers that Shani Dev is the ruler of the planet Saturn, which is the planet of 'Karma.' It is associated with the zodiac signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Its effects can be both positive and negative, depending on its placement in the birth chart. If Saturn is well-placed, it can bring success, recognition, and prosperity to the native. However, if it is placed in an unfavourable position, it can cause delays, obstacles, and challenges in one's life.

Rituals & Observances of “Shani Jayanti”

Shani Jayanti holds immense significance for all the devout followers of Shani Dev. The devotees visit a nearby Shani Temple or Navagraha Temple & light a mustard lamp mixed with black sesame seeds. For Shani Puja, evening time is considered the best. Offering black Til (black sesame seeds) to Lord Shani is very meritorious, hence, people perform the Shani Tailabhishekam along with the Shani Shanti Puja.

Many mantras related to Lord Shani are also chanted to calm down his impact. The recitation of Shani Stotra is also observed. Remember that the power of the mantra lies in the intention and devotion behind it. Chanting the Shani mantra with faith and sincerity can alleviate the negative effects of Saturn in one's life.

Many people observe a strict & devoted fast to observe penance for any ill deeds committed in the past and to seek refuge of Lord Shani. The devotees abstain from consuming food and water during the entire day and break their fast only after performing the evening Puja.

At many places, the women observe a fast of Vat Savitri on this day. As per the Purnimanta lunar calendar system (followed in North India), it is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya, coinciding with Shani Jayanti. And in the Amanta lunar calendar system (followed in parts other than North Indian states), it falls during Jyeshtha Purnima. Hence, we find a 15-day gap between the observance of Vat Savitri Vrat by North Indian and South Indian women.

Donating black grams, sesame seeds, mustard oil & black clothes to the poor, needy on Shani Jayanti is believed to be a powerful practice to appease Shani Dev. Feeding animals, birds & insects, especially black dogs, crows & ants, also fills one's life with prosperity and desire fulfilment.

Legend behind “Shani Jayanti”

Lord Surya, the radiant Sun God, was married to Sangya (also known as Samjna), the beautiful and devoted daughter of the celestial architect, Vishwakarma. Though deeply in love with her husband, Sangya found it hard to bear the intense brilliance that constantly surrounded him. The overwhelming radiance made her life difficult, and she resolved to perform deep penance to either match his brightness or somehow lessen its impact on her.

At this point, Sangya and Surya had three children: a daughter named Yamuna, and two sons—Vaivasvata Manu and Yama, the god of death. Despite her love for them, Sangya made a difficult decision. She chose to temporarily leave her home to pursue spiritual austerities. But before leaving, she created her own shadow replica—Chaya—and named her Savarna. She entrusted Chaya with the duty of taking care of her children and managing household life, with one strict instruction: never reveal the truth to Lord Surya.

Chaya, humble and obedient, agreed and began living as Sangya. Meanwhile, Sangya went to her father’s home seeking his support. But her father, the stern Daksha, was furious. He scolded her, reminding her that tradition frowned upon a daughter visiting her parents uninvited. Left with no choice, and unwilling to put either her husband or father in an awkward situation, Sangya transformed herself into a mare and journeyed north to the region of Uttara Kurus to engage in relentless penance.

Back at home, Surya continued his life, unaware of the switch. He accepted Chaya as his wife, and in time, they had three children: Savarni Manu, Shani (Saturn), and a daughter named Tapati. While Chaya was carrying Shani in her womb, she immersed herself in deep meditation, offering her prayers to Lord Shiva. She remained in intense penance under the scorching heat of the sun, neither eating nor resting. The spiritual energy of her austerities deeply influenced her unborn child.

When Shani was born, his appearance was unlike others—his complexion was dark, a direct result of the divine penance performed by his mother. But Surya, seeing the child’s dark skin, began to question Chaya's fidelity. Doubtful and enraged, he mistreated both Chaya and the newborn Shani.

This injustice awakened Shani’s inherent power. As a child of divine penance and an emerging devotee of Lord Shiva, Shani cast a powerful gaze upon his father in anger. That single glare caused Surya’s own brilliance to fade, his body to darken, and his divine chariot to stall. His horses lost their lustre, and chaos followed.

Confused and weakened, Surya turned to Lord Shiva for answers. After intense prayer, Shiva revealed the truth: Shani was indeed his son, and Chaya was not Sangya but her shadow, assigned to protect the family in Sangya’s absence. Realising his grave mistake, Surya sought forgiveness from both Chaya and Shani. A sense of peace was restored, and a new bond formed between father and son.

Shani, blessed with immense spiritual power and divine knowledge, became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Under Shiva's guidance, he gained mastery over cosmic justice and karma. From birth, he was destined to be a force that no being in the universe could escape—not even the gods themselves. Legends say that even Lord Shiva and mighty kings like Vikramaditya were once humbled by Shani’s influence.

In Vedic astrology, each planet corresponds to a divine entity. Saturn is ruled by Lord Shani, the embodiment of discipline, justice, and karmic retribution. He ensures that every soul receives the fruits of their actions, both good and bad. Everyone must face Shani’s gaze at some point in life, and no one is exempt.

As per sacred texts, Lord Shani once travelled to Kashi (Varanasi), where he consecrated a Shiva Linga and performed intense austerities. The site came to be known as Sanaiscar-esvara. It’s believed that worshipping Lord Sanaiscaresvara in Varanasi, especially on Saturdays, can help devotees overcome Saturn’s hardships.

Interestingly, Lord Hanuman is often worshipped to ease the adverse effects caused by Shani Dev. Devotees believe that by praying to Hanuman, one can earn the favor—or at least the tolerance—of the strict but just Saturn deity.
