;
Who am I?
Not your name. Not your body. Not even your thoughts.
Then who?
This timeless question lies at the heart of Hindu philosophy—and over the centuries, one brilliant sage gave us its answers through his philosophy.
Adi Shankaracharya taught that the world is Maya – an illusion that veils the ultimate truth. It's transient and ever-changing, unlike eternal reality.
He emphasised that the Atman (soul) is independent of the physical body and remains unaffected by Samsara. It represents the true essence of an individual.
Ekkata, the most trusted vedic astrologer, highlights the essence of Adi Shankaracharya on his birth anniversary – the sage who revived Hindu Dharma when it was fading.
Adi Shankaracharya was an Indian Vedic scholar, founder of the Dashanami monastic order, a unifier of the Shanmata tradition, and expounder of one of the most prominent philosophies of Hindu Dharma – Advaita Vedanta.
The exact date of birth of Adi Shankaracharya is not known. However, most historians believe that he was born around 788 CE.
Through his teachings he helped individuals find their true purpose and enlighten them with the absolute truth of life, particularly through the teachings of Advaita Vedanta, emphasising the non-duality of the self and the ultimate reality.
Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti falls on Panchami Tithi during Shukla Paksha of the Vaisakha month (April to May).
Adi Shankaracharya was born in the village of Kalady, Kerala, India. He was the only child of a poor Brahmin family. His parents, Aryamba and Shivaguru, were huge devotees of Lord Shiv. According to belief, Lord Shiva appeared in their dream and gave them the blessing of a son, and soon they became parents. Which suggests that Adi Shankaracharya was an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
Adi Shankaracharya's father passed away at a very early stage of his life, and his upbringing and education were all taken care of by his mother, Aryamba. By the age of 16 he had mastered the Vedas and scriptures and written commentaries on the Prasthanatrayi, Bhagavad Gita, Brahman Sutras and Upanishads.
Adi Shankaracharya was attracted towards hermits from early childhood. He attained samadhi around 820 CE in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand. With a lifespan of 32 years. Some historians suggest that he entered samadhi in Kanchipuram.
This year marks the 1238th birth anniversary of Adi Shankaracharya. Shankaracharya Jayanti will be observed on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

At the time when religions like Buddhism and Jainism were very popular across India. The Sanatan Dharma and Upanishads became less followed. Adi Shankarcharya revived Hindu Dharma when it was on the decline.
He was the one who reconciled different sects of Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and Shaivism and introduced the Panchayatana form of worship, which means the worship of the five major deities: Ganesha, Surya, Vishnu, Shiva, and Devi. He believes that all the gods are different forms of one being.
Adi Shankaracharya travelled widely across India and gained a number of disciple scholars, including Padmapadacharya, Totakacharya, Sanandana, Bodhendra, Sadananda, etc.
During his travels, he also participated in public philosophical debates with different Hindu philosophers and heterodox traditions like Jains, Saugatas, Arhatas, and Buddhists and imparted Hindu culture.
Adi Shankaracharya revived and organised the Advaita Vedic tradition, which highlights the following key aspects:
Shankaracharya emphasises that Brahman is real, the world is an illusion, and it's important to understand reality on both physical and metaphysical levels.
Advaita Vedanta highlights the non-dual nature of reality. Which means the association between a person and the universe, Atman, is not different from Brahman.
Where jivatman is the pure awareness and jivatman is not different from Brahman, but rather from the body and its senses.
It emphasises that a state of moksha (liberation) is attained when a person gains discipline and experiential knowledge of Brahman.
Spiritual knowledge can only be attained by swayam prakasha, which means self-luminous awareness or witness consciousness.
It is the primary concept of Advaita Vedanta, which represents ignorance of the true nature of reality. It leads individuals to perceive themselves as a separate entity from the universe, which creates a cycle of samsara (death and rebirth). One can achieve spiritual growth and liberation by renouncing avidya, preventing individuals from suffering and achieving true joy in life.
He explains that suffering is only our mind's perception. A conditioning of mind through the gunas is important to achieve consciousness.
The illusion hides the true nature of reality and creates false perceptions. True consciousness helps us move beyond this illusion and focus on self-knowledge and spirituality. A deeper understanding of energy lies behind the appearances of the world.
Adi Shankaracharya emphasises that only true knowledge, rituals, karma, bhakti and worship can purify the mind and prepare the seeker to gain spiritual enlightenment and self-realisation/self- awareness.

According to Advaita Vedanta, there are three types of reality:
These are the temporary illusions, like dreams, thoughts, misunderstanding, and imagination.
For example: dreaming at night
This is a practical reality where life happens, including people's emotions, insults, relationships, success, happiness, and ego. Duality exists here, like if we are happy, we can also be sad.
For example: our daily life emotions
The ultimate truth is that everything is one; the same consciousness exists in everyone. For example: It is the ultimate truth beyond everything.
Adi Shankaracharya simplified this in a very easy way:
That is, what seems real now (the world or dreams) is not the final truth; only the absolute oneness (Brahman) is truly real.
Although Adi Shankaracharya lived a short life, in that period he achieved something extraordinary. Adi Shankaracharya's timeless wisdom includes the following:
