In Hindu Dharma, we consider Ekadashis as very propitious. There is a saying in Vedic texts about the importance of Ekadashis:
॥ एकादश्यां निराहारो यो नरः केशवं स्मरेत्।
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति ॥
॥ Ekādaśyāṁ nirāhāro yo naraḥ Keśavaṁ smaret
sarva-pāpa-vinirmukto Viṣṇu-lokaṁ sa gacchati ॥
Meaning:
It means that one who observes Ekadashi with full devotion gets free from all the sins and finds a place in the divine abode ( Vaikuntha ) of Lord Vishnu.
Among the 24 Ekadashis that come in a year (and 26 Ekadashis in a year with Adhik Maas ), “Apara Ekadashi” holds special prominence. “Apara” means ‘boundless/ limitless.’ Hence, this divine day is believed to bestow devotees with infinite blessings of the Almighty. We also know it by different names like Achala Ekadashi, Bhadrakali Ekadashi, and Jalakrida Ekadashi.
This year, we are observing “Apara Ekadashi” on the 13th of May 2026.
As per “ Drik Panchang ”, the “tithi” for “Apara Ekadashi” in 2026 is as follows:
Once, there lived a very kind and honest king named Mahidwaja. Contrary to him, his younger brother Vajradwaja was cruel. Vajradwaja hated him as he couldn’t get the throne after their father’s death. Due to jealousy, one night, he killed his elder brother secretly while he was sleeping. And after this, he hid his dead body under a peepal tree in a forest.
Because of this unnatural death, the soul of Mahidwaja did not find peace. His aatma (soul) kept wandering and troubled the people living in that area.
One day, Dhaumya Rishi was passing through that forest. On his way, he sensed the presence of the king’s soul. With his spiritual powers, he got to know the reality. He felt very generous towards his soul and wanted to help him. He gave him spiritual knowledge about the afterlife.
Then, the sage advised him to observe a strict fast on the Ekadashi that comes on the Krishna Paksha of the Vaishakh month, i.e. Apara Ekadashi. In addition, he also donated all the spiritual merit (punya) he had earned from his fasting to Mahidwaja.
Eventually, the king observed the fast and prayed to Lord Vishnu wholeheartedly. As a result, his soul found peace.

When Arjuna, the Pandava brother, asked Shri Krishna about the importance of Apara Ekadashi, Lord Krishna said:
“Apara Ekadashi dissolves sins caused by not only murder, evil spirits, and insulting others, but also terrible sins like adultery, false testimony, reading false Vedas, making false Shastras, misleading people, and cheating people by pretending to be a false doctor, etc.
If a Kshatriya runs away from the battlefield, he can also get heaven (in place of hell) by observing a fast on this Ekadashi.”
Similar to its name, the benefits of Apara Ekadashi are ‘infinite’:

In Brahma Purana, one of the sacred Hindu texts, there is a saying which mentions that observing just 24 Ekadashis (or 26 - in case of Adhik Maas) can offer merits equal to performing the Char Dham Yatra, reciting Vishnu Sahasranamam thousands of times, and performing 100 Govardhan Pujas.
The sages wanted to make Ekadashi an accessible path to everyone in the world. They understood that not everyone would be able to go on a pilgrimage or perform grand ceremonies. Hence, they made Ekadashi the great equaliser to them all.
The Vedas state that Ekadashi is a simple yet powerful spiritual practice. One who practices it with discipline, devotion, and inner awareness opens the sacred path to the lotus feet of Shri Hari Vishnu.
