Etymology and Iconography

Etymology: The message hidden in her name

Bhairavi comes from Bhay which means fear in Sanskrit. She is known as the one who decays, demolishes, and kills the “old form” to create new life.

She is also called Tripura Bhairavi. It means the Goddess of three fortresses or cities. The Tri in her name indicates three levels of consciousness. A devotee has to ascend all these levels to witness Brahman.

Brahman is the supreme reality. This state of consciousness makes a person go beyond death of the mortal body. She makes them deathless.

For ordinary devotees, she is known as a very loving and caring mother. She removes all obstacles and ailments. She is also known as protecting them from evil forces.

Iconography: What does she represent?

Goddess Bhairavi is depicted differently in different texts. Her most prominent form is known as the one resembling Goddess Parvati. She has a bright halo around her.

Devi has four arms. She holds a rosary in one hand and a book in another hand. The other two hands are in Abhaya (banishing fears) and Varada (granting boons) mudra (gesture).

She is mostly depicted in red attire to represent fire, lightning, and thunderous courage.

In fierce portrayals she has piercing and furious eyes. Her skin is dark red. She is smiling and baring her teeth.

Her dark complexion presents the unknown. She has the power to kill ego and materialistic desires. She also kills physical weakness and sickness.

She is in a cremation ground with four arms. She is holding a Trishul or trident. In another hand she holds the chopped head of a demon. The other two hands are in Varada and Abhaya mudra.

She is dancing, like the tandava of Lord Shiva, among the slain corpses of demons. This shows her willingness to take on all the enemies. She is known for destroying inner fears to lead to transformation.

Tales from the Hindu Scriptures

There are many legends for Devi Bhairavi in various Hindu scriptures. However some of the most popular legends come from Durga Saptashati and Narada Purana.

Devi Bhairavi and Chanda-Munda

Goddess Bhairavi is mentioned as Chandi or Chamundeshwari in Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmya. The principle text of Shakt School of Hinduism.

The text describes a fierce battle between two cruel demons Chanda and Munda and the Devi. Chanda-Munda were generals of Demon King Shumbha. They came to fight with Goddess Durga.

Then Devi Bhairavi emerged from the forehead of Devi Durga and killed the demons Chanda and Munda. So, Devi Parvati granted her the name Chamundeshwari.

She is a very fierce warrior who drinks the blood of her enemies. She is the energy of death and transformation.

Devi Bhairavi in Narada Pancharatra

According to the Narada Pancharatra, Goddess Kali, who is dusky, wanted fair skin. So she disappeared from her abode. When Lord Shiva noticed her absence he asked the celestial rishi Narada to trace her.

He told Lord Shiva that Devi is now residing in the North of Sumeru mountain. Lord asked rishi to visit her. Devarishi Narada reached the mountain and asked Devi to marry Lord Shiva.

The goddess became ferocious with this proposal. And then manifested herself as Bhairavi or Tripura Bhairavi. For this, she is also known as a fierce manifestation of Goddess Kali.

Devi in Spiritual practices

For regular devotees, Devi Bhairavi Upasna can dispel evil eyes, wicked spirits, and negative energies. Her devotees gain eloquent speech and dynamic personality. She removes anxieties and irrational fears from mind to steer it in the right direction.

Maa Bhairavi - Astrological Significance

Devi is associated with Lagna or the ascendant. In the natal horoscope, it is the first house that determines your life’s direction, your physical appearance, the karmic play of your soul, the success quotient and many other important elements.

Maa Bhairavi controls speech, touch, human behaviour, thinking, and personality traits. She is often portrayed in red clothes.

The warrior Goddess represents fire, the courage to take on challenges, and evolve with struggles. These qualities are also given by a favorable Mars, the deha karka in vedic astrology.

Association with the Kundalini Shakti

In the Kundalini Chakra system Devi Bhairavi is the supt or dormant coiled serpent in the root chakra or the Mooladhara Chakra. She is waiting to arise. But that won't happen without overcoming fears, challenges, and limiting assumptions.

So, she is associated with getting rid of negativity to purify the devotees. So they can awaken the Kundalini to reach the ultimate state of consciousness.

Testimony

My younger son is in 12th standard when he suddenly became totally disinterested in studies. He was a good student before that but started bunking college and became secluded.

I was so worried about his studies as well as his mental health. Despite counselling he was not improving at all.

Then my wife asked me to consult an astrologer and I found Ekktaaji through a reference. We met her in July 2025. She heard our problem with empathy and compassion. Although we were not able to find exact words sometimes to describe the situation.

She told us what planetary transits were pulling him towards seclusion and distraction. She prescribed easily doable remedies. And slowly our son started opening up. We observed a remarkable shift in his focus towards his academic studies and has been consistent in his attendance too.

I'm forever grateful to Ekktaa ji for her precious guidance and remedies.
