The Birth of the Enlightened One - From Full Moon to Full Awareness Through Vedic Astrology Reading

“Buddha Pournima” is a very important day for the Buddhists as it marks the divine birth of Gautam Buddha, the founder of their faith. The Buddhist tradition believes that Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, in 623 B.C. Later on, the place became a very holy pilgrimage.

Buddha wasn’t born with the same name; indeed, his childhood name was Siddhartha. He was born into a royal family of the Shakya clan. His parents were King Suddhodana and Queen Maya. It’s believed that before his birth, his mother had a dream of a white elephant entering her womb. This symbolised that she was going to give birth to a holy child who was destined to become a great leader in life.

Many Buddhist inscriptions mention that his mother gave birth to him while travelling to the home of her parents. One of the most well-known descriptions of Siddhartha’s birth is found on a pillar that was made by Emperor Ashoka in 249 B.C. The Greatest Emperor of the Magadha region was a devout follower of Gautam Buddha.

Many legends also mention that straight after birth, when ordinary children are not able to make proper movements, Siddhartha miraculously walked seven steps.

So, by birth, Buddha was not a spiritual leader, but a prince. He had access to all the lavish comforts of mankind. Then, how did he lay the foundation of Buddhism and go on the path of enlightenment? Let’s understand below.

From Siddhartha to Buddha: A Journey of Awakening

The Four Sights That Changed Siddhartha’s Life

During the birth of Siddhartha, a prophecy was made that he would become a great leader in the future. So, his father presumed that he would succeed his father and serve the kingdom. But destiny had different plans for Siddhartha.

One day, out of curiosity, he stepped outside with the help of his charioteer to explore the world. At first, he saw an old man and got to learn that everyone gets old someday. The second time, he saw a sick man suffering from a disease that made him contemplate life, as in his kingdom, everyone was well cared for.

The third time Siddhartha went to explore more, he witnessed a deceased man. He understood that life is not permanent; we all are going to leave this earth one day. Next time, he saw an ascetic who had left all worldly pleasures and was on a path to spirituality.

Siddhartha got very inspired by this man. He wanted to follow his path to release himself from the suffering of life. That day, he went on to achieve the path of enlightenment.

How Siddhartha Got the Name “Buddha”

For a continuous six years, he lived with ascetics in the forest, strictly following their practices. They had a very simple aim in life: to survive with little. But initially, Siddhartha did not find it right.

One day, he accepted a bowl of rice from a little girl. This made other ascetics leave him behind, thinking that he would not be able to follow their way of life. This made Siddhartha alone.

He found a place under the Bodhi tree near Bodhgaya, India. He sat there and started to contemplate that neither he enjoyed the luxuries of the palace nor the life of being an ascetic.

One day, when he was still thinking the same, Devaputra Mara, the leader of the demons, tried to distract him, but he failed. Then, he appeared in the form of a beautiful lady to tempt him, but he couldn’t succeed.

Despite all this, Siddhartha kept on meditating, and one day, he found the middle way. He understood that there is a solution to the extremities of life. And in that moment of realisation, he became “Buddha.” “Buddha” stands for the “one who is awake” or “the enlightened one.”

Anybody, including you, me, and everyone on this earth, can be a Buddha during this lifetime. We only need to realise the truth of life and follow the path of wisdom.

The Four Noble Truths: The Core Teaching of Buddhism

After 7 days of attaining enlightenment, Buddha went on to share this perspective of the Middle Way with the world. He encouraged people to live a life of balance. He started his journey of teaching at Sarnath. It is located near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He gave his first sermon, Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, at one of the four most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites, Sarnath. After this, he spent 45 years teaching spiritual knowledge in India.

Now, let’s understand the Four Noble Truths given by Gautam Buddha through this pictorial representation:

Noble Eightfold Path

Gautam Buddha gave the following 8 ways/ principles to live a mindful life without extremes:

a) Right View

We need to understand the impermanence of life first; nothing is permanent at all. Every action you take now will have an impact later on. This is what we call ‘Karma.’

b) Right Intention

Whatever we do in life needs to be done with purpose; with no hatred, no jealousy, no negative feelings towards anyone. Always remember the kind of energies you create for anybody, including yourself, affect you first. So, what will you choose to think about today?

c) Right Speech

Buddha teaches that it is very important to speak with honesty, compassion, and awareness, ensuring that our words do not harm others.

d) Right Action

Karma is the actions we perform. We need to perform every deed while holding on to the ethical and moral values. Remember that every Karma of yours will return to you one day. If you do everything in life with good intentions, the Almighty blesses you.

e) Right Livelihood

We see many people around us earning by wrong means, let’s say robbery. This is against the Noble Eightfold Path. It says that you need to choose an honest way to earn a livelihood. Never indulge in wrong deeds just for the sake of extra material benefits. It never bears fruit.

f) Right Effort

Keep on working towards becoming a better version of yourself every day. Stay away from negativity. This way, you become one step closer to Nirvana.

g) Right Mindfulness

In today’s digital world, the concept of multi-tasking (doing multiple things at a time) is in trend; people believe that it makes them productive. However, in reality, this is not how you live a mindful life. Being mindful means doing one thing at a time, with your full commitment, dedication, and effort. Stay anchored to the present moment and live it fully.

h) Right Concentration

It is equally important to train your mind to think right. You can do so through meditation, deep breathing exercises, and a gratitude journal, etc. Eventually, it will bring your concentration towards the right thing while performing your Karma.

Understand the deep Karmic patterns of your life through birth chart reading. It will help you release past burdens and embrace your true path.

Astrological Significance of Buddha Pournima

In Vedic Astrology, all the Dashavatars (ten incarnations) of Shri Hari Vishnu are associated with a specific planet, symbolising different aspects of life and consciousness. As the Vaishnava tradition considers Buddha as the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu, he is associated with planet Mercury (Budh).

Mercury is the planet of intellect, communication, and analytical thinking. It represents clarity of mind, wisdom, and the ability to discern truth from illusion. This beautifully aligns with Buddha’s teachings, which emphasise awareness, right understanding, and mindful speech. His path encourages us to cultivate clarity, express truth with compassion, and develop a balanced, thoughtful approach to life.

Conclusion

Gautam Buddha gave the world the true meaning of living, rather than just surviving. Through his teachings, he gave us liberation from suffering before death. In today’s fast-paced world, all of us need to realise and understand the reality of life, as told by Buddha. Ask yourself: have all the materialistic comforts you have earned yet made you feel content from within? Or are you always thinking of achieving more and more? This Buddha Pournima, let’s take an oath together to work towards achieving inner peace in place of staying stuck in the never-ending loop of desires.

Buddha as The 9th Avatar of Lord Vishnu: Vedic Insights by Ekktaa

Rooted in Vedic wisdom, Ekktaa mentions how some Hindu Shastras consider Buddha as the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

As the Hindu Dharma says, whenever wrongdoing and sin increase on the earth, Shri Hari Vishnu comes in an avatar to restore balance and guide humanity back to earth. He has taken a total of 9 incarnations yet.

The Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism considers Buddha as the ninth avatar of Prabhu Vishnu. It sees the birth of Buddha as a divine response to the growing ignorance, suffering, and inner turmoil in the world.

He brought the concepts of compassion, mindfulness, and detachment to the people to help them cleanse their minds from sin, illusion, and negativity and show them the path toward peace and enlightenment.

His teachings gently guided humanity away from blind rituals and towards inner awakening and self-realisation. In this way, Buddha’s incarnation is seen not just as a reform but as a compassionate effort by Lord Vishnu to restore dharma through wisdom and peace.
