Chitragupta Puja 2025: Rituals, Legends and Spiritual significance

Among the many revered deities of Hindu tradition, Lord Chitragupta holds a special place, he maintains the karma ledger of all the human beings, ensuring that righteousness  prevails always. His watchful eyes serve as a reminder that every act carries weight, and every wrong deed has consequences. Let's begin with Lord Chitragupta's Stuti:

मसिभाजनसंयुक्तश्चरसि त्वं महीतले । लेखनी-कटिनीहस्ते चित्रगुप्त नमोऽस्तु ते |

Meaning :

Lord Chitragupta, armed with a vessel of ink, waistband and pen, you traverse the earth. I offer my obeisance to you.

The Chitragupta Puja is observed on the same day as Yama Dwitiya, which falls on the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month. On this day, the Kayastha community worships Lord Chitragupta, pen, inkpot, and account book to seek blessings for profound knowledge, wisdom, spiritual enlightenment, and success in academic performance and  business.

Who is Lord Chitragupta? Why do Kayastha communities worship him?

Chitragupta is the record keeper of karma. He is in charge of maintaining records of human actions in his register, called agrasandhani. It is believed that, when a person dies, he goes to Yamloka. Chitragupta reads the account of deeds in front of the lord of death, Yamraj. Depending on the person's actions on earth, Yamraj then decides whether the person will go to heaven or hell.

Chitragupta is the seventeenth manasputra of Lord Brahmas. He was created from the kaya of Brahma Ji (soul and mind); hence, he had wisdom of Brahman and duties of kshatriya and his descendants are called Kayasthas. That's why this puja is mainly performed by the Kayastha community to honour their patron god.

As per the legends, Lord Chitragupta has two consorts - Iravati and Nandini.

Iravati also known as Shobhavati, is the daughter of Lord Yama & Dharmadevi. As we all know the role of Yamraj, one who maintains moral order and dharma, which is closely aligned with the role that Chitragupt ji plays.

Nandini, the second consort, who is known as Shobhavati is the daughter of Lord Surya and Devi Saranyu (Sanjna). Through these sacred unions, lord Chitragupta further grew the kayastha community namely saxena, Mathur, Kulshreshta and many others.

ChitraGupta ji  gave his pen and inkpot  to his descendants, as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom as his legacy to enlighten generations ahead. Today, the Kayasthas are among the most cultured and civilised people in the country, primarily engaged in writing and administrative professions.

Legend of chitragupta's puja

Building of Chitragupta Temple by Prabhu Shri Ram

During Treta Yug, when Lord Rama returned from exile, Bharata sent sage Vashishtha to invite all the gods and goddesses for the coronation of Lord Rama. Sage Vashishtha forgot to invite Chitragupt Maharaj. Angered by this oversight, Chitragupt ji put aside his pen and inkpot, which created chaos in Paraloka and Narakaloka, bringing all the cosmic work to a standstill.

Upon recognizing the mistake, Lord Rama built a Chitragupta Temple in Ayodhya and offered prayers to Chitragupta Maharaj. After 24 hours, Chitragupta ji resumed his duties, worshipping his pen and inkpot. Since then, the Kayastha community people worship Lord Chitragupta ji, his pen and inkpot on the day of Yamadwitiya. This sacred ritual is celebrated as Chitragupt Puja.

Yama's Request for Order in Yamaloka

To maintain the balance and justice  on earth, Lord Brahma assigned duties of karmic book- keeping to Lord Yamaraj. As the celestial responsibility was enormous , Lord Yama requested assistance for the same. Brahma meditated for 1000 years and created 17 mindborn sons. Chitragupta was the 17th son of Lord Brahma, originating from his navel. He was  named Chitragupta and the duty of maintaining the human  record of karma was assigned to him. That’s how Lord chitragupt and Yamaraj work closely to safeguard the cosmic order.

Worshipping writing tools

The Padma Purana mentions Lord Chitragupta was placed right next to Lord Yama to record the good and bad deeds of humans. His pen and inkpot have made a great contribution towards it. Apart from this, Chitragupta’s writing tool is the symbol of his role as a scribe and accountant. On this auspicious day, devotees offer prayers to a pen and inkpot as a symbol of Chitragupta ji’s presence.
