Dev Deepavali – When Gods Themselves Descend to Celebrate on Earth

It lies on the Kartik Purnima (full moon day), fifteen days after the celebrations of Deepavali as per the Hindu Panchang. However, in some regions, "Dev Deepavali" is observed on the very first day of the Margashirsha month, especially in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

According to the Gregorian Calendar, it falls in the month of either November or December.

This year, "Dev Deepavali" is on the 5th of November 2025.

"Dev Deepavali" is celebrated prominently in the Indian city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. And as per many beliefs, Gods & Goddesses descend directly from heaven to the earth, especially in Varanasi, to take a holy bath in Ganga, on "Dev Deepavali" to commemorate this festival.

Being an important festive occasion for Hindus, "Dev Deepavali" also marks the end of the holy four-month' Chaturmas period, in addition to the conclusion of the Deepavali celebrations.

Legend behind "Dev Deepavali":

There's a very great story lying behind this divine day of "Dev Deepavali" as mentioned in the Hindu Shastras. It narrates why Lord Shiva killed Tripurasur, the sole reason why this occasion is commemorated with zeal and enthusiasm.

The legend is as follows:

As mentioned in the ancient Shiva Purana, there was a demon named Tripurasura causing trouble for both humans and gods. He conquered the entire world and built three cities in space called 'Tripura.' The gods were upset with what he did and asked Lord Shiva for help. Then, Lord Shiva, in his form as Triputantaka, used one arrow to kill Tripurasura and destroy his three cities on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima. Hence, the Gods and Goddesses call this victory "Dev Deepavali."

Observances on "Dev Deepavali":

As per the Hindu traditions, a lot of rituals & observances are followed by the devotees on "Dev Deepavali" which are as follows:

  • Devotees rise early on Dev Deepavali to partake in the 'Kartik snan,' a sacred ritual involving a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges for spiritual purification.
  • The traditional belief is that on this day, the river turns into nectar, and bathing in its waters is considered auspicious.
  • The religious ceremony progresses with priests chanting Vedic mantras and setting off fireworks to welcome and please the Gods and Goddesses.
  • Later on, performing 'Deepdaan', i.e., offering oil lamps, in the honour of Goddess Ganga is also observed.

  • The main ritual of "Dev Deepavali" is the lighting of diyas after seeing the moon. From the southernmost Ravidas Ghat to Rajghat, every step of the River Ganga's 87 ghats is adorned with millions of lit diyas as a tribute to Goddess Ganga and other presiding deities. This is termed "Ganga Mahotsav."

As per “Drik Panchang”,

  • Pradoshakal Dev Deepavali Muhurat - 05:15 PM to 07:50 PM
  • Duration - 02 Hours 35 Mins

The sight of thousands of lamps flickering in unison is both awe-inspiring and spiritually uplifting. The display isn't just on land; illuminated boats and floating lamps on the Ganges add to the otherworldly beauty of the event.

And this unique tradition of lighting Diyas on "Dev Deepavali" was actually started at the Panchganga Ghat in the year 1985.

  • Then, Ganga Aarti is performed.
  • Many people are also involved in decorating their homes with oil lamps and colourful designs of Rangoli.
  • At many places, the "Akhand Ramayana" Path is also organised.
  • As evening falls in Varanasi, lively processions featuring beautifully decorated deities parade through the streets, accompanied by the excitement of the crowd. The night sky comes alive with the sparkle of fireworks. Following the festivities, there are dance performances and cultural programs.
