अगजानन पद्मार्कं गजानन अहर्निशम् ।
अनेकदन्तं भक्तानां एकदन्तं उपास्मे ॥

Agajaanan Padmarkam Gajaanan Aharnisham |
Anekadantam Bhaktaanaam Ekadantam Upasme ||

Just as Devi Gauri's (Goddess Parvati's) face lit up after seeing the face of her beloved son Gajanana. Likewise, Shri Ganesha's grace always shines on his devotees, fulfilling their many desires and prayers. We worship Ekadanta (the one with one tusk) with devotion to fulfil our righteous aspirations.

Introduction

Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati, the foremost worshipped deity, the mascot of auspiciousness, and the chief of Lord Shiva's Gana.

Ganpati Jayanti is a Hindu festival commemorating the birthday of Shri Ganesh (Lord of Wisdom). It is celebrated in Maharashtra, Goa and coastal regions of Konkan as Maghi Ganpati. Many states of India celebrate Lord Ganesha's avatara (manifestation)  during the Bhadrapada month, known as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Its deeper meaning can be understood in more detail through Hindu philosophy where God is described in two ways:

  •  Nitya/ Tattva level:

The Lord is eternal and formless, representing divine existence as pure consciousness that governs the universe.

Maghi Ganpati honours Ganesha’s tattva and birth principle i.e. discipline, vrata, inner transformation.

  •  Lila/ Vyavhara level:

This is the personal and visible form of the God so that devotees can connect with the divine force.

Bhadrapada Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha arrival and divine presence among devotees i.e. utsava , joy and community.

Significance of celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha

Ganesh Jayanti is considered more beneficial than Ganesh Chaturthi for remedial purposes, as Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in a grand and external manner, while Ganesh Jayanti is subtle and inward-focused. Devotees therefore seek quicker results through remedial practices on this day for the following concerns :

  • Career blockages
  • Financial crises
  • Mental peace
  • Sankalp

If someone worships Lord Ganesha with true devotion, faith and penance, Ganpati ji bestows them with abundance, prosperity and overall wellness.

Sacred Folklore

The Vedic texts recount a profound and sacred pastime of Lord Ganpati, revealing the depths of devotion, duty and divine will.

Once when Maa Parvati decided to bathe, she asked Nandi to stand guard at the door. When Lord Shiva arrived, Nandi allowed him to enter, which deeply upset Parvati maa. She decided then and there,  ‘I will create a gana of my own, one who will be loyal only to me.’

Using the ubtan applied to her body, Maa Parvati created a childlike form and infused it with her divine energy. She breathed life into it. There emerged a radiant child, whom she accepted as her own son. Maa entrusted Lord Ganesha with the sacred duty of guarding the doorway and strictly instructed him not to allow anyone to enter while she bathed.

After some time, Lord Shiva returned and tried to enter. The young Ganesha, following his mother’s instructions, refused him. Lord Shiva was very furious and ordered his attendants to remove the boy. However, being the son of Adishakti, Lord Ganesha possessed immense power that none of Shiva’s forces could defeat him.

Surprised by this, Shiva calls the celestial beings, yet Ganesha defeats everyone. Even Lord Brahma appeared in the guise of a sage to pacify the young boy, but he too was driven away. In a moment of fierce anger, Lord Shiva raised his trident and severed Ganesha's head.

When Devi Parvati learned about this tragedy, she was in extreme grief and fury at the same time. In her anguish, she threatened to dissolve the entire creation. Realising their grave mistake, Lord Shiva and all the gods asked for her forgiveness.

Maa Parvati agreed to restore balance only when two conditions were fulfilled: her son Ganpati must be brought back to life and he must be worshipped before all the other deities in every ritual and prayer.

To fulfill her wish, Lord Shiva sent Lord Brahma to find the head of the first living being he encountered. After a thorough search, Brahma returned with the head of a powerful elephant. Lord Shiva placed the elephant’s head upon Ganesha’s lifeless body, restoring him to life.

Lord Shiva embraced Ganpati as his own son and bestowed upon him the supreme honour of being worshipped foremost among the other gods. That's how Lord Ganesha became Vignaharta, the remover of obstacles, the first deity to be invoked in every sacred beginning.
