River worship is an important cultural and religious practice of Sanatan Dharma. Rivers are considered a divine flow of life, symbolising purification, liberation and nurturing mothers. In Kaliyuga, the descent of river Ganga is believed to be essential for enlightenment, inner peace and liberation of the soul from the karmic cycle. Even a few sprinkles of her sacred water can purify the body and soul.
For Hindus, the Ganga is not merely a river, it is a sacred symbol of purity and a divine Goddess worshipped since ancient times.
Her spiritual significance is beautifully expressed in the sacred Ganga Gayatri mantra.
ॐ त्रिपथगाया विद्महे, भागीरथ्यै च धीमहि, तन्नो गंगा प्रचोदयात्।
Om Tripathagaya Vidmahe, Bhagirathyai Cha Dhimahi, Tanno Ganga Prachodayat.
Meaning: We meditate on Mother Ganga, who flows through Tripathaga (heaven, paatala and Earth). We meditate and worship Bhagirathi. May Mother Ganga motivate us towards knowledge and enlightenment.
Ganga Dussehra is a revered Hindu festival celebrated along the banks of the River Ganga. It commemorates the descent of the Goddess Ganga from heaven to earth.
The Ganga is the holy river of India. The word 'Dussehra' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Dasha Hara', which means 'destruction of 10 types of sins'. It is believed that bathing in the sacred river during this period removes past-life sins and leads to purification, moksha and liberation.
This festival is observed for 10 days, during which rituals, fasting, Ganga Puja and fairs are organised in various states of India where the rivers flow, including Uttarakhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.
The Ganga River has been considered the holiest river since the Vedic period. She is revered as the goddess of purity, compassion and spiritual liberation.
According to the Bhagavata Purana, when Vamana, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu, extended his foot to the end of the universe, the nail of his toe created a divine hole. Through the openings, the sacred water of the Ganga entered the universe and washed the feet of Lord Vishnu.
As the Ganga directly touches the feet of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, she is said to have descended from Brahmaloka, the abode of Brahma. For this reason, she is also called 'Vishnupadi', "one who originates from the feet of Lord Vishnu."
Ganga is also regarded as the daughter of Himavat and sister of Goddess Parvati.
In Vedic texts, the Ganga River is described as pure, life-giving, and nurturing like a divine mother.
Ganga Dussehra, also known as Ganga Avataran, is observed on Dashmi, the 10th day of the Shukla Paksha, in the month of Jyeshtha.
According to Drik Panchang, the timings of Ganga Dussehra are mentioned below:

The descent of the Ganga River on earth is linked to the legend of King Sagara and his 60,000 sons. Once, he performed the Ashvamedha Yagna, a powerful Vedic ritual. However, during the ritual, the sacrificial horse went missing.
It is believed that his 60,000 sons went into the forest in search of the sacrificial horse. During their search, they found Sage Kapila, engaged in deep meditation. They accused him of theft, disturbing his penance. Angered by this false accusation, Sage Kapila became furious and opened his eyes; through his divine glance, he reduced all 60,000 sons to ashes. After death their souls remain unrested, as they were not given proper funeral rites. When King Sagara pleaded with Sage Kapila for mercy, he told him that only the holy water of the Ganga could liberate them.
Many years later, Bhagiratha, a descendant of King Sagara, performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma and requested the descent of Ganga from Brahmaloka to Earth to release the trapped souls of his ancestors.
Lord Brahma agreed but warned Bhagiratha about the intense force of the Ganga River. He advised Bhagirath to seek Lord Shiva's help to hold her powerful impact.
Bhagiratha then pleased Lord Shiva through penance.
Lord Shiva agreed and held the Ganga in his locks, and then gently released her flow onto Earth.
When the holy water touched the ashes of the sons of Sagara, their souls attained moksha.
Since then, the descent of Ganga has been celebrated as Ganga Dusshera.

Many people often confuse Ganga Dussehra and Ganga Saptami, as both festivals are dedicated to Maa Ganga and celebrate her divine presence. However, they represent two sacred events. Ganga Saptami is celebrated during the Vaishakh Shukla Paksha as the rebirth of Maa Ganga. According to Vedic texts, Sage Jahnu once swallowed the powerful flow of Ganga and later released her through his ears. From that moment, Ganga is also called Jhanvi. This day symbolises divine manifestation, spiritual renewal and purity. (Read our full article on Ganga Saptami)
Saptami) In contrast, Ganga Dussehra is observed a few weeks later on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami. It is a celebration of the holy descent of Maa Ganga from the locks of Lord Shiva to the earth after King Bhagirath did a severe penance to liberate his ancestors. Hence, this day is associated with liberation and purification.
Observing this day removes karmic burdens, purifies the soul, and brings blessings of goddess Ganga for spiritual growth, happiness and overall well-being.
In 2026, Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated on 25th May 2026.
The Ganga Dussehra is observed along the banks of the River Ganga, especially in Haridwar, Varanasi and Prayagraj; rituals like Ganga snan, Ganga arti and deep daan are performed with devotion.
