Jaya Ekadashi: The Sacred Day of Victory and Blessings - Find Your True Calling Through Career Astrology Consultation

Long ago, demonic energies overwhelmed the world, even the devatas were distressed. Demon Mura grew stronger with every battle.
After fighting relentlessly for many years, Lord Vishnu withdrew into Yogic Nidra. The moment he closed his eyes, a powerful divine feminine energy emerged from Him, resonating with the cosmic vibrations “Hoom”.
This radiant Shakti, later known as Ekadashi Devi, destroyed the demon Mura and restored balance to the Universe.
Pleased, Lord Vishnu blessed humanity with a boon; ‘Those who observe Ekadashi Vrat with devotion, discipline, dedication and surrender shall rise above sins and progress towards higher consciousness’.

There are 24 kadashis in a year, each with their own spiritual uniqueness. Among them, Jaya Ekadashi is the sacred ekadashi that commences in the Magha month.
Let's dive deeper into the spiritual essence of Jaya Ekadashi in the article

(The insights are guided by the wisdom of Ms Ekktaa, a leading expert in Vedic astrology and numerology.)

Meaning of Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) in the month of Magha. Jaya means victory, symbolising the victory of good over evil.

Ekadashi is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This vrat is believed to wash away accumulated sins, including brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin), one of the most heinous sins.

Devotees observe this fast to achieve liberation, salvation, purification from negative karmas, and attainment of the abode of Lord Vishnu (Vishnu loka).

Astrological significance of Jaya Ekadashi

Ekadashi is a sacred day to perform astrological, religious and spiritual practices. From an astrological perspective, Jaya Ekadashi carries these key significances:

Mental confusion:

Ekadashi is linked with balancing the moon’s energy, as it is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of the Magha month. Observing Jaya Ekadashi Vrat helps to calm planetary energies that affect the mind, especially the moon.

Reduce karmic blockages:

Observing a fast on Jaya Ekadashi strengthens self-discipline, dissolves old karmic patterns, and aligns one with Vishnu Tatva. Through fasting, prayer, and focused intention, positive karma is generated, the soul is purified, and karmic knots are dissolved.

Spiritual awakening:

It's crucial to cultivate a pure soul rather than a pure body and mind. The Ekadashi vrat supports spiritual awakening, as this sacred day is governed by Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe.

Jaya Ekadashi is called the 'Ekadashi of Victory'. Anyone seeking victory or growth in any area of their life should observe a fast on this day to reduce the burden of past karmas and delays in life.

Vrat katha of Jaya Ekadashi

The celestial celebration:

As per the Bhavishya Uttar Purana, a grand festival was celebrated in Nandanpur. All the gods, sages, and divine beings were present. The air was filled with the melodious songs of the Gandharvas, while Gandharva maidens performed enchanting dances.

Malyavan and Pushpavati:

A Gandharva named Malyavan and a Gandharva maiden named Pushpavati were dancing in the gathering. As soon as Pushpavati saw Malyavan, she fell in love with him. Pushpavati, disregarding the etiquette of the gathering, initiated a dance that captivated Malyavan. Seeing Pushpavati, he lost his senses and deviated from the decorum of singing, leaving him without rhythm and melody.

Curse of Lord Indra:

Indra, enraged by Pushpavati and Malyavan's indecent behaviour, cursed them to be deprived of heaven and dwell on Earth in the form of a Pishacha.

Mortal world's suffering:

In the mortal world, the curse transformed them into a pishach form (evil spirits), and they took up refuge on a tree in the Himalayas. Both of them suffered immense hardship in the pishach yoni.

The power of Jaya Ekadashi:

Once, on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of the Magha month, both were devastated and ate only fruits. They felt very cold at night, so they sat together and couldn't sleep the entire night. Due to excess cold, they both died. They had unknowingly observed Jaya Ekadashi fast. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, Malyavan and Pushpavati were liberated from the ghostly realm and attained a place in heaven.

Indra’s blessings and joyful heaven return:

When Lord Indra saw them, he was astonished at their appearance and purity. Malyavan and Pushpavati explained that Lord Vishnu's Jaya Ekadashi had liberated them from the ghost world.

Pleased with their devotion, Lord Indra honoured them and blessed them, saying they were now worthy of happiness and peace. He welcomed them to live joyfully in heaven, free from all suffering and sorrow.
