"Kaal Bhairav Jayanti" is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the birth anniversary of Lord Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Celebrated on the eighth day, i.e. Ashtami of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Margashirsha (in North India) & Kartik (in South India), it is also known as "Maha Kaal Bhairava Ashtami" or "Kaal Bhairav Ashtami."
As per the Gregorian Calendar, it lies in the month of November or December.
This special day is considered even more auspicious when it happens on a Tuesday or Sunday because these days are specifically devoted to Lord Kaal Bhairav.
This year, "Kaal Bhairav Jayanti" is on the 12th of November 2025.
As per Drik Panchang, the "tithi" for "Kaal Bhairav Jayanti" in 2025 is as follows:
The day of "Kaal Bhairav Jayanti" is considered most auspicious by the devotees of MahaKaal as it is observed as the day when Lord Shiva took the form of Bhairav to protect the universe from negative forces. Kaalbhairav is said to be the fierce form of Mahadev. Hindu people also worship him as the "Hindu God of Time."
The word Bhairava is derived from the Sanskrit roots “Bhī,” meaning fear, and “rava,” meaning sound or cry. Together, they describe the one who is beyond all fears — the fearless protector. Thus, Bhairava represents the fierce form of Lord Shiva, who destroys negativity, safeguards his devotees, and fills them with courage, clarity, and inner strength.
Lord Bhairava, a powerful form of Lord Shiva linked with destruction, punishes those who do wrong and safeguards devoted followers. Among the 64 Bhairavas, 8 are the main ones - the ashtabhairavas, and all of them are under the rule of Lord Kala Bhairava.
The essence of Kaal Bhairav lies in being a guardian against the dual forces of time and fear. The name suggests the protector (Bhairav) from the impacts of time and the anxieties that come with it. For someone grappling with fear or apprehension, invoking Kaal Bhairav serves as a reminder and source of strength. It encourages individuals to face their fears by seeking protection and support from the timeless and formidable aspect represented by Kaal Bhairav.

There are lots of legends behind this blissful occasion of "Kaal Bhairav Jayanti."
Long ago, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma had a fight over who was the best of the Tridev. While they were arguing, all the gods agreed to look in the Vedas (old Shastras) for an answer. The Vedas said that one who includes the past, present, and future is the best. And ultimately, it pointed towards Lord Shiva.
Lord Vishnu accepted this, but Brahma was unhappy and spoke harshly to Shiva. Shiva got mad at Brahma for acting badly and turned into Kaal Bhairav, a fierce form. Kaal Bhairav, who had divine strength, even cut off the fifth head of Lord Brahma with the little finger of his left hand.
When Lord Brahma realised the gravity of his mistake and how his arrogance had angered Lord Shiva, he repented deeply for his actions. Filled with remorse, he approached Mahadev and sought forgiveness for his harsh words and prideful behaviour. Lord Shiva, being compassionate, forgave Brahma, but since Lord Kaal Bhairav had severed Brahma’s fifth head, the act was considered a grave sin — the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a creator).
To absolve himself of this sin, Lord Shiva instructed Kaal Bhairav to go to Kashi (Varanasi), the sacred city known for its purifying power. There, Kaal Bhairav undertook penance and cleansed himself of the curse. Pleased with his devotion and repentance, Lord Shiva blessed him to become the eternal guardian and protector of Kashi.
From that moment on, Kaal Bhairav has been revered as the Kotwal (chief guardian) of the holy city. It is believed that no pilgrimage to Kashi is complete without first seeking the blessings of Baba Kaal Bhairav, whose divine presence protects devotees from negativity and ensures their spiritual safety.
In a different tale, there was a demon named Dahurasuran who had a boon that only a woman could defeat him. To restore balance, Goddess Parvati took the fierce form of Goddess Kali and destroyed the demon in a mighty battle. However, even after his death, her anger blazed so intensely that it gave rise to a divine child born from her own energy. As Kali’s fury slowly subsided, she transformed into her compassionate, motherly form and lovingly nursed the child — a being that embodied both creation and destruction, symbolising the perfect balance of cosmic forces.
Recognising the immense power contained within both Goddess Kali and the child, Lord Shiva absorbed them into himself to restore universal equilibrium. From this divine union emerged the Ashtanga Bhairavas, a group of eight powerful manifestations of Lord Shiva, each representing different aspects of strength, protection, and cosmic order.
To complement this celestial energy, the Ashta Matrikas — the eight mother goddesses symbolising feminine divinity and creative force — were united with the Ashta Bhairavas in a sacred and harmonious union. This divine convergence gave rise to 64 Bhairavas and 64 Yoginis, who together form the intricate web of cosmic energy that governs both the physical and spiritual realms.
These celestial beings are believed to protect devotees, balance the forces of the universe, and guide seekers toward liberation by teaching them the importance of both discipline and devotion in spiritual life.
In another story about the origin of Lord Kaal Bhairav, Goddess Sati jumped into the fire of the Yagna Kund (sacred fire pit) to show that she could no longer bear the humiliation caused by her father, King Daksha, who had insulted Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva learned of this tragic event, grief and fury engulfed him. In his anguish, he took the fierce form of Kaal Bhairav — the embodiment of divine justice and destruction — and appeared before King Daksha. Overcome by righteous anger, Kaal Bhairav ended Daksha’s life by severing his head, bringing an end to the arrogance and disrespect shown towards the divine.
However, even in this moment of fury, Lord Shiva’s purpose was not mere revenge but restoration of cosmic order. To balance the forces of creation and destruction, he appointed Kaal Bhairav as the eternal guardian of all Shakti Peethas — the sacred abodes of the Goddess that emerged from the scattered body parts of Goddess Sati. From that moment, Kaal Bhairav has been revered as the protector of the divine feminine energy, ensuring that purity, respect, and justice prevail wherever the Goddess is worshipped. This tale beautifully reflects Lord Kaal Bhairav’s role as both a destroyer of evil and a defender of sacred truth.

The Bhairav Ashtakam, composed by Adi Shankaracharya, consists of eight stanzas that pay homage to Lord Kaal Bhairav. In these verses, the hymn describes the appearance and qualities of Lord Kaal Bhairav.
The first two stanzas mention his divine presence in addition to how sages and yogis perform his Puja. It also mentions that he supports the Universe and protects his devotees. The next two stanzas portray Kaal Bhairava as the punisher of evil, the reliever of sins and sufferings, and a bestower of prosperity.
Continuing, the hymn describes Him as the eternal guardian of righteousness, a reliever from the fear of death and the cycle of karma. Kaal Bhairav is emphasised in the seventh stanza as the destroyer of sin and the possessor of eight Siddhis - Ashtasiddhis, or supernatural abilities. The final stanza says that as the ruler of spirits, he bestows peace, glory, happiness, and prosperity. As the protector of Kashi, the Vedas describe him as the one who absolves sins and guides devotees along the path of Dharma (righteousness).
