The account of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean) is one of the most well- known and revered events in Hindu tradition, deeply embedded in its cultural, spiritual, and philosophical heritage.
During the Samudara Manthan, a divine moment unfolded when Lord Vishnu appeared as the Kurma Avataram. This was the reminder to stay focused and trust in divine support.
The sacred verse below is drawn from the sacred Shrimad Bhagavatam, describing the divine appearance of the Kurma avatar during Samudra Manthan:
सुरसुराणामुद्धिं मथन्तां मंदराचलम्.
दध्रे कमठरूपेण पृष्ठ एकादशे विभुः ॥
Surasuraanaamuddhin mathantaan mandaraachalam.
Dadhre kamatharoopen prshth ekaadashe vibhuh.
Meaning: When the Dewas and Asuras initiated churning of the ocean, Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and held the mountain on his back.
Let us explore the deeper aspects of Kurma Avatar. Guided by Smt. Ekktaa’s Vedic wisdom (an acclaimed Jyotish astrology guide).
Kurma Jayanti is a sacred observance that commemorates the birth of Kurma Avatar, Lord Vishnu's second Avatar, who manifested as a giant tortoise.
Lord Vishnu incarnated as the Kurma Avatar (a massive tortoise), to bear the weight of Mandara Mountain on his back, preventing it from sinking and helping Devas and Asuras retrieve the nectar of immortality. His appearance during this period is a symbol of divine support, patience, stability, and growth.
The Kurma Jayanti festival is especially observed in the southern states of India. On this day devotees worship Lord Kurma with deep devotion to seek his blessings for balance, strength, and stability in life.
According to traditional iconography, Lord Vishnu's Kurma Avatara is depicted as a massive tortoise, symbolising strength and resilience. In Vedic tradition, the tortoise is revered as the predecessor of all living beings, representing the emergence of creation. It also represents the evolutionary stage following Matsya (the fish), which marks the transition from aquatic to amphibian life.
In Taittriya Samhita, the tortoise is considered as Yagna Purusha, a deity equivalent to yajna (sacred ritual). Thus, the Kurma Avatar holds a status equal to that of a sacred yajna.
Every year, Kurma Jayanti is celebrated with great devotion and faith. According to Drik Panchang, this year Kurma Jayanti will be observed on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Sage Durvasa was known for his supreme wisdom, strength, and fierce-natured temperament.
Once, Sage Durvasa offered a garland of flowers to Lord Indra, the king of Swarga. Indra mistakenly placed the garland on his elephant (Airavata), who then threw it to the ground. As the garland was a religious offering Sage Durvasa felt insulted. In anger, Sage Durvasa cursed Lord Indra and the Devas to lose their fortune and power.
As a result of the curse, Swarga became devoid of wealth, power, and purity.
Taking advantage of this situation, the Asura king Bali attacked heaven. The Devas now became weak and were defeated by Bali. The Devas approached Lord Vishnu for help. He advised that Devas and Asuras should come together to churn the Ocean of Milk to obtain the immortality nectar to regain the power of Dewas.
However, the churning of the ocean was an exhausting process. Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and Vasuki, the king of snakes, became the rope. Vasuki coiled himself around the Mountain Mandara; the Devas took the tail end, and the demons took the head end. Thus, the churning of the ocean began.
Due to the immense size of Mountain Mandara, it started sinking into the ocean. Once again, the Devas prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.
At that moment, Lord Vishnu incarnated as a giant tortoise, the Kurma Avatar, to support the mountain. Lord Kurma held Mount Mandara steadily on his back , the shell throughout the entire Samudra Manthan process.
With the support of the Kurma avatar, fourteen divine treasures (Ratnas) emerged from the ocean, including the deadly Halahal poison, Kamdhenu cow (divine cow), Airavata (celestial elephant), Kaustubha Mani, the Kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree), a white horse (Uchhausheavas Ghoda), Goddess Lakshmi, Apsara Rambha, and immortal nectar.
Thus, the samundra manthan was successfully completed.
The Kurma Avatar symbolises that during the times of chaos, Lord Vishnu always appeared as a protector to restore harmony and righteousness.
Just like the divine support remained unseen yet held everything together, your career success too has its own divine timing.

On this occasion, she explains Lord Kurma’s ancient wisdom to navigate modern life challenges.
In a world that rewards speed, noise, and visibility, Kurma Avatar offers something unexpected. Stillness.
When the ocean was being churned, it wasn't the loudest force that held everything together. It was a tortoise. Silent. Steady. Unseen beneath the surface.
Kurma didn't fight anyone. Didn't give a sermon. Didn't ask for recognition. He just carried the weight and let transformation happen on its own.
We live in that same kind of churn every day. Work, relationships, emotions - all pulling us in different directions. And our instinct is to react, to push harder, to do more.
But Kurma says the opposite. Stay still. Hold your ground. You don't need to control the outcome; you need to survive the process.
Because the nectar never arrives first. The poison does. And only those who hold still long enough get to see what comes after.
Takeaway:
You don't always have to fight, react, or prove yourself. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is hold your ground and let things unfold. The poison always comes before the nectar; your only job is to stay steady long enough to receive it.
Lord Vishnu took Kurma Avatar to bear the weight of Mount Mandara on his back, providing support and enabling the Devas and Asuras to extract Amrita.
Fourteen divine treasures emerged from the great churning of the ocean.
In 2026, Kurma Jayanti will be celebrated on 1st May.
