Laxmi Jayanti

Lakshmi Jayanti, also known as Madan Purnima, Basant Purnima and Panguni Uthiram (southern India), is a sacred Hindu festival celebrating the divine appearance of Devi Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity. On this day, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi emerged during the churning of the ocean, known as samudra manthan.

It is observed on the full moon day (Phalguna Poornima) in the Hindu month of Phalguna.

Iconography of Goddess Lakshmi

In her iconography, Devi Lakshmi is depicted as a beautiful woman, elegantly dressed in a bright red saree, adorned with heavy gold jewellery, symbolising abundance and prosperity. Vedic texts suggest that her four hands represent the four prime goals of human life that lead to a blissful life: dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

To understand more, below are the key elements of Goddess Lakshmi's iconography:

A) Four arms:

Goddess Lakshmi is depicted with four arms. Two of her hands hold lotuses, which signify purity and prosperity, while the other two hands are in Abhaya mudra, symbolising divine protection.

Sometimes she is depicted in varada mudra with gold coins rolling from her palm.

B) The two elephants:

In her portrayal there are usually two elephants behind her, anointing her with water from golden vessels, symbolising continuous process.

C) Lotus Flower:

She is often depicted standing or sitting on a lotus flower, symbolising the importance of spiritual prosperity over material attachments.

Legends: Emergence of Devi Lakshmi

According to Vedic texts, once Indra Dev disrespected a divine garland given to him by the revered sage Durvaasa. Enraged by Indradev's disrespect, sage Durvasa cursed him, declaring that his glory, prosperity, wealth and power would all be taken away.

As a result of the curse, Indradev's strength faded, and he gradually lost control over Swarga. Everything that once made Swarga radiant slowly disappeared.

Indra Dev and other gods then approached Lord Vishnu, who ordered the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to restore cosmic balance (dharma).

During Samudra Manthan, the first thing to emerge from the churning was poison (Halahal Vish). After the poison, a divine cow (Kamdhenu cow), a white horse (Uchhausheavas Ghoda), Airavat Hathi, Kaustubh Mani, the wish-fulfilling (tree Kalpavriksha), and the Apsara Rambha appeared.

Finally, Goddess Lakshmi emerged. Immediately after her appearance, she chose Lord Vishnu as her consort, symbolising her role as the supreme goddess and also assisting him in the creation, preservation, and transformation of the universe.
