Lakshmi Pujan: Invoke Wealth, Prosperity & Fortune

“Lakshmi Pujan” is a very propitious Hindu festival as it reveres the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and good luck, Mata Lakshmi. In our country, people celebrate Lakshmi Pujan by different names, such as "Diwali Puja," "Deepavali Puja," and "Lakshmi Ganesh Pujan." Basically, "Lakshmi Pujan" is the third (3rd) day among the five-day-long Diwali festivities. Every year, it comes on the Amavasya (New Moon Day) of Krishna Paksha in Kartik Month as per the Purnimanta calendar. On the other hand, it’s Ashwin month according to the Amanta calendar.

According to the Gregorian Calendar, it falls in the month of either October or November.

We are celebrating the divine festival of "Lakshmi Pujan" on the 20th of October 2025 this year.

According to Drik Panchang, the "tithi" for "Lakshmi Pujan" in 2025 is as follows:

  • Lakshmi Puja is on Monday, 20th of October 2025
  • Amavasya Tithi Begins at 03:44 PM on Oct 20, 2025
  • Amavasya Tithi Ends at 05:54 PM on Oct 21, 2025

Significance of “Lakshmi Pujan”

The Hindu texts call Maa Lakshmi the consort of Lord Vishnu, and she embodies wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. Devotees pray to her for financial peace and blessings.

According to the Vedas, there is a sacred belief that Maa Lakshmi visits the homes of her devotees on the day of Lakshmi Pujan. If she is pleased with the sanskaras such as pujas, offerings (prasads), and most importantly, a clean and happy environment, her happiness blesses the devotees with prosperity and immense wealth.

Symbolising abundance, Lakshmi's blessings are seen as essential for a comfortable and joyful life. That's why the devotees seek her grace for happiness, health, and overall well-being on this day.

Observances on "Lakshmi Pujan"

On "Lakshmi Pujan", people keep their home and surroundings clean properly to welcome the goddess. Elaborate rangoli (colourful patterns made on the floor), diyas (oil lamps), and decorations with marigold flowers and Ashoka, mango, and banana leaves create a festive ambience.

Many also place Mangal Kalash with whole coconut on both sides of the main entrance, as it brings blessings and good energy to the home.

At night, lamps & Diyas are lit by the people. People also buy & wear new clothes on this day.

On this auspicious day, particularly the women in each household are accorded significant importance. They are regarded as earthly manifestations of the goddess Lakshmi, who represents prosperity and wealth. These women's happiness and well-being are seen as crucial to the household's overall success.

To prepare for Lakshmi Puja, a red cloth is set on the right side of a raised platform. Then, idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are installed, adorned with silk clothes and jewellery. On the left, a white cloth is placed on a raised platform for the Navgraha gods. Then, nine slots with unbroken rice for Navgraha on the white cloth and sixteen slots of wheat or wheat flour on the red cloth are created.

Shubh Muhurat for "Lakshmi Pujan"

The Vedic astrology recommends performing the Lakshmi Puja in the Pradosh Kaal on Diwali, starting after sunset and lasting roughly two hours and twenty-four minutes. It is generally believed to be more suitable for Tantrik communities and experienced Pandits who are aware of the subtleties of Lakshmi Puja during this specific time period, even though some sources suggest Mahanishita Kaal. For the benefit of the general public, we recommend performing the auspicious Lakshmi Puja according to the Pradosh Kaal Muhurat.

The best time for Lakshmi Puja is during Pradosh Kaal, especially when Sthir Lagna or a stable and fixed period is prevalent. Sthir Lagna is the most auspicious time to perform the Lakshmi Puja because it is believed to prolong the stay of Goddess Lakshmi in the home. Vrishabha Lagna is known for being stable, and this time it coincides with Pradosh Kaal. This makes it an auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja during Diwali.

As per Drik Panchang,

  • Lakshmi Puja Muhurat on Monday, October 20, 2025 - 07:38 PM to 08:37 PM
  • Duration - 00 Hours 59 Mins
  • Pradosh Kaal - 06:09 PM to 08:37 PM
  • Vrishabha Kaal - 07:38 PM to 09:38 PM

Don't on "Lakshmi Pujan":

In Hindu tradition, it is advised not to pray to Goddess Tulsi while invoking the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. The reason for this precaution is the belief that Shaligram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is married to Tulsi, the sacred basil plant. Praying to both goddesses at the same time can cause an energy conflict and possibly result in the loss of Lakshmi's blessings.
