There are three major schools of Hinduism: Vaishnav, Shaiv, and Shakt. Vaishnav school of Hinduism believes that Lord Vishnu is the supreme deity who alone, creates, sustains, and protects the universe.
For the above-mentioned cause, he has taken 24 incarnations in different yugas. Yugas are smaller periods in a Kalpa. Kalpa is a cycle of time which comes from the word sankalpa. So, Kalpa is the will of God to create a universe for a fixed time. Lord Vishnu is the one who creates Kalpa. He comes in different yugas to protect his creation.
Ergo, all the 24 incarnations were born to achieve a specific purpose. Lord Hayagriva is the 12th incarnation of lord Vishnu among his 24 incarnations. He is a very important deity in the Vaishnav school of Hinduism.
Lord Hayagriva Jayanti is observed on 8th August 2025.
According to Drik Panchang this year it falls on
Lord Hayagriva is a blend of two words Haya and Griva. Haya means horse and Greeva is neck or mouth. He is depicted as a human with a horse head.
In Vaishnavaite school of Hinduism, he safeguards all the divine knowledge. Some views claim that any kind of knowledge, be it mundane or divine, is treasured by Lord Haygreev.
Lord Hayagriva is represented as a fair and strong man with a horse head. The horse is white. His garments are white. He is seated on a white lotus.
He has four arms. He holds a discus and a conch in two of his hands. These are the traditional symbols associated with Lord Vishnu.
Apart from that he holds a book and a rosary. These symbols are unique to Lord Hayagriva.
The whiteness is dominant in his depiction as he is the highest form of embodiment of pure or divine knowledge.
The story of Lord Hayagriva has two versions
In one version, Lord Vishnu goes to meet Lord Shiva. In his absence, Lord Brahma the creator of Vedas, was uttering Vedas in his sleep. Vedas are the source of all the knowledge of the universe.
Taking the advantage of the absence of Lord Vishnu, a horse-headed demon called Hayagriva or Ajnana, heard the shlokas. He grabs the divine knowledge in his mouth and runs away. In some versions he stole the manuscripts of the four Vedas. The demon Haygreev was an arduous devotee of Goddess Kali. She granted him a boon that he will be killed only by his lookalike.
Lord Brahma informed Lord Vishnu about the theft and plausible misuse of the divine knowledge by the demon. Lord Vishnu took the exact form of the demon. This avatar is also known as Hayagriva. Lord Vishnu killed the demon. And he retrieved the divine knowledge of the Vedas
Another story comes in the first chapter of Durga Saptashati in the Markandeya Puran. King Surath and merchant Sadhu go to the sage Medhas seeking refuge who narrates the indomitable prowess of Mahamaya or Devi.
According to this account, in the beginning of the universe there was nothing but kshirsagar. Lord Vishnu was reclining on the Seshnag. He was in his cosmic slumber due to the Maya or illusion of Devi. Here she is referred to as Yog nidra.
At this point, a lotus springs from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma the creator of all the divine knowledge is seated on that lotus. He starts speaking divine verses of Vedas and pens them down too.
Nearly at the same time, from the ear wax of Lord Vishnu two demons Madhu and Kaitabh are born. They both practiced hard penance. Then Goddess granted them the boon that they'll have iccha-mrityu or death on wish.
After the boon they become almost immortal. The demons steal the Vedas from God Brahma. Lord Brahma prays to Lord Vishnu to wake up. But Lord Vishnu cannot wake up due to the bonds of Yog nidra.
Then Lord Brahma fervently prays to the Devi to free the eyes of Lord Vishnu. The goddess takes pity on him. She leaves the eyes of Lord Vishnu.
Once awake, Lord Vishnu comes to know about the brazenness of the demons. He took the form of Hayagriva and fought with the demons. They fought with bare hands for five thousand years.
When the Goddess observes that the war is not reaching the climax she tricks the minds of both the demons. The demons under the spell of the Goddess boast about their prowess. They claim that they are utterly impressed by the resilient bravery of Lord Vishnu, in the form of Hayagriva, who fought with them for such a long period. Then they decide to reward his unparalleled gallantry to face the invincible demons. Madhu and Kaitabh command Lord Vishnu to ask for a boon.
Lord quickly asks that he should be given the honour to slay both of them. The demons look around and see endless waters. They chuckle and agree. However, they put a condition that they should be killed at a place where there is no water. Lord Vishnu obliges. He places the head of both the demons on his thighs and kills them. The story reflects the prowess of Mahamaya or Devi who controls every element including Lord Vishnu and Brahma.

The story of Markandeya Purana explains the purpose of the Avatar of Lord Hayagriva. Madhu means honey which represents rajas tattva. Kaitabh means a worm (here it is taken as the honeybee) which is the presentation of tamas. Lord Brahma comes as satva. So the three elements are always present in creation.
Honey and honeybee shows the inclination of the human mind to run after a materialistic world. The humans become ignorant about divinity. Only Lord Hayagriva can fight the rajas and tamas to take you back to satva.
On the occasion of Lord Hayagriva Jayanti people bathe and dress in yellow or white clothes.
