;
Hinduism is known for the worship of devi or female goddesses from the dawn of civilization. There are various manifestations of devi which are worshipped daily by the majority of Hindus.
However there are also some manifestations which are worshipped under specific guidance and are more powerful than any other manifestation. These manifestations are known as dasa Mahavidya.
Dasa Mahavidya is a term for 10 goddesses of great wisdom or ancient wisdom. The dasa mahavidya are :
Kali, Tara, Shodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala.
Each manifestation serves a special purpose in Hindu mysticism. They grant special boons to their devotees. Some also consider them as different steps in the ladder of Hindu mysticism.
Maa Baglamukhi is one of the dasa mahavidya
She is the eighth goddess of the ten goddesses. She belongs to the Shri Kula. Although Maa Baglamukhi is a goddess of tantra tradition she is also worshipped in the Shakta tradition.
Shakta tradition is a school of sanatan dharmaa where the female form of energy is worshipped as the Supreme Mother.
The name Baglamukhi is a combination of the two words- Bagala and mukhi.
Some people say that Bagala is an apbhransh of the Sanskrit name, Valga. Valga means to curb.
Some experts say that Bagala means bridle or rein.
Another view is that the word Bagala comes from the bird Vaka, bakula, or bagula which is called Crane in English.
The bird is known for his ability to stand absolutely still while hunting. The bird is often used as an example of focus and concentration in Vedic wisdom texts. The term bakul-dhyanam means to meditate or concentrate like a crane.
The other word Mukhi means faced, facing, or head.
So it also means one who curbs or restrains the face (mouth) or crane-like face.
Baglamukhi Jayanti or the day she appeared falls on Vaishakh Shukla Ashtami. The eighth day of the waxing phase of Hindu lunar month of Vaishakha.
According to Hindu panchang this year it falls on May 5th 2025.
As per drikpanchang,
In Vedic astrology, each manifestation of divine powers of the Dasa Mahavidya is associated with a particular planet. Worshipping that particular devi can work as a remedy to remove the negative influence of the planet. The devi worship can also enhance the positive effect of the planets.
It depends on the horoscope birth chart reading of the individual.
The Dasa mahavidya are associated with all the 9 planets. Here, Maa Baglamukhi is connected with the planet Mars or Mangal.
She is mainly associated with settling legal disputes. And is known for paving a path for wins in court cases.
It is also said that devi has total control on all the nine planets. She can remove all the negative effects of the birth chart. But thorough horoscope birth chart reading is needed to know which form of Devi sadhana is suitable for you.
She is also known to stun or immobilise the enemies of her devotees and bestows the devotees with all forms of prosperity.
Maa Bagalamukhi is also known to give the boon of words or eloquence.
Maa Baglamukhi is depicted chiefly in two forms. She is dwi-bhuja or two-handed. She is also Chatur-bhuja or four-handed.
The two-handed form is a soumya or milder form. Here she is holding a club in her right hand and holds the tongue of demon Madan in left hand. She is raising the right hand to strike the demon.
This is the symbolism of her power of stambhan or stunning the enemies. She can stun or control the tongue, thoughts, or desires of the enemies.
In mystic or tantra tradition she is pictured with four hands. She has a crescent adoring her head.
She is said to be of yellow or golden complexion. She wears a garland of yellow flowers. She is also known as Pitambara or one with yellow garments. She is wearing all the jewellery as per a Hindu married woman.
Yellow represents gold, sun, grain, turmeric, earth, and fire. All these represent purity and prosperity.
There are many puranic, folk, and mythological stories associated with every God or Goddess in Hinduism.
Maa Bagalamukhi also has many stories about her but mainly two stories are linked with her.
It is said that goddess Parvati was sitting with her husband Lord Shiva on Kailash. Maa Parvati was starving and asked her husband to provide her some food. Lord Shiva was meditating. He asked her to wait patiently till he finishes her meditation.
But Maa Parvati was feeling weak and hungry. She kept on asking for food. Finally, angry at her husband she swallowed him.
Maa Parvati swallowed her husband whole like a crane swallows a fish as a whole. So, she was called Bagalamukhi. Lord Shiva asked her to take him out. Smoke started to come out of her body. Once out, Lord Shiva angrily said that the woman who swallowed her husband (like a crane) is Bagalamukhi. The woman without her husband (when he was inside her body not beside her) is a widow, Dhumavati. Thus, we had the manifestations of Bagalamukhi and Dhumavati.
However, swallowing Lord Shiva is symbolic of the control Maa Bagalamukhi has on the powers of Lord Shiva. She can control even the most powerful God in Hinduism. Such is her power of stambhan.
Another legend says that, during Satya Yuga, a train of oceanic thunderstorms started destroying the earth. Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the Trinity of Hinduism, started worshipping Goddess Tripura Sundari on Haridra Sarovar, to calm the storms.
Goddess Tripura Sundari was pleased with the penance of Lord Vishnu. She appeared as Maa Bagalamukhi from the lake of turmeric.
She calmed the storms. She saved Mother Earth from destruction. She also restored the order in the Universe.
The main temple of Maa Bagalamukhi is the Shri Baglamukhi Shakti Peeth in Shivampet, Narsapur in Telangana.
Another notable temple is situated in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.
Other famous temples are in Nalkheda town and Datia town, both in Madhya Pradesh.
Apart from these, there are Dasa Mahavidya temples in the premises of Maa Kamakhya Devi in Guwahati.
In addition to the temples and Shakti peeth there are many stotra and hymns dedicated to the goddess.
We have all heard that Dasa Mahavidya Sadhna needs a Guru. The reason is simple. These are potent energies. The sadhna or penance can backfire if the rituals or mantras or the rules of the penance are followed to the T.
The reason that these Mahavidya have a significantly darker side, they are not worshipped by ordinary devotees. Furthermore, it is very difficult to find a guru who is spiritually advanced enough to guide others in the Dasa Mahavidya Sadhna. It is the devi who chooses her sadhaka, a gift, where Maa draws you into her divine stillness
In the end we can say that they are very strong devi manifestations who can move mountains for the welfare of their devotees.
