In the scriptures Lord Brahma describes the Goddess as the one who wore a blood-red coloured garland and applied red-blood sandal. She has unmatched brilliance, blood- red teeth, and a blessing hand.
In popular Hindu temples, Goddess Bhuvaneshwari is depicted as a beautiful and radiant woman. She bears the moon on her forehead.
She is portrayed with all the jewellery a Hindu married woman should wear. She is seated on a lotus. She has four arms.
In one hand she holds a noose. It represents her power to bind and control negative forces.
In her second hand, she holds a goad or ankusa. Ankusa is her chief weapon. It represents that she leads her devotees on the path of righteousness. In her third hand, she holds a lotus flower which is a symbol of purity.
And in her fourth hand, she holds a sword. The sword tells us that she “cuts off” the ignorance and darkness to purify her devotees.
She encompasses all the divine beings which are her manifestations in various forms
In Devi Bhagwatam, her abode is described as Manidweepa. It is also called Sripura or Sri Nagar. The Manidweepa is an island situated in the cosmic ocean called Sudha Samudra.
Trinity and Goddess Bhuvaneshwari
After the ending of a certain cosmic cycle an endless void prevailed. In this period Lord Brahma woke up from his sleep. He was clueless about the purpose of his existence and the void encircling him. To probe further, he awakened Lord Vishnu from his yoganidra. Lord Vishnu was also unaware of the universe. So both of them met Lord Shiva to discuss the purpose of the existence of the trinity in a void.
While they were discussing their confusion a divine maiden appeared and courted them to Manidweepa. There they witnessed that Goddess Bhuvaneshwari is seated on a divine throne. She is the one whatever has existed, is existing, and will exist.
Goddess Bhuvaneshwari addressed the confusion of the trinity. She reminded them of their identities and duties to maintain the cosmic order.
To help them in their roles she provided gyan shakti or power of wisdom, the Goddess Saraswati to Prajapati Brahma.
She gave her willpower or Iccha shakti, the Goddess Lakshmi to Lord Vishnu
She lent her power to act or Kriya shakti the Goddess Kali to Lord Shiva.
Then she sent them to their assigned abodes so they could fulfil their duties.
Before the beginning of the universe, Lord Brahma desired to create the universe but lacked the power to do it. To acquire the necessary power, he undertook intense austerities to please the Goddess Parashakti.
Satisfied by Lord Brahma’s tapasya, Devi took the form of Bhuvaneshwari. Then she assisted Lord Brahma in creating the universe.
According to another story Devi Bhuvaneshwari emerged from the cosmic ocean during the churning of the milky ocean by the gods and demons. She radiated immense power and beauty. Her brilliance captivated all the beings present there.
Inspired by her brightness, Lord Brahma decided to call her Goddess Bhuvaneshwari.
