Hinduism is branched in many schools. Tantric school is one of the vaam marg schools or unconventional paths of worship in Hinduism.
The Tantric school reveres the Dasa Mahavidya or a pantheon of ten goddesses of great wisdom who grant supernatural powers or siddhis to the worshippers.
Maa Tara is the second Devi of the Dasa Mahavidya. She is worshipped by both the Hindu and Buddhist Tantra schools.
Maa Tara is worshipped on the Navami Tithi of Chaitra Navratri. This year it falls on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
As per Drikpanchang,
In the Tantric school of Hinduism, Maa Tara, the second of the Dasa Mahavidya, is known as the giver of wisdom and intellect. She bestows Vak Sidhi or the power of speech on her devotees. She is often worshipped by students as Neel Sarswati for the boon of knowledge and skills.
Student life is the best period to chart out the rest of your life. Yet, sometimes students find a lot of impediments to pursue their desired field. On the other hand, some of the students start neglecting their studies despite every help available.
If your child falls in either of these categories then you must reach out to Ekktaa, an accomplished Vedic Astrologer and researcher from Pune. You can seek an online horoscope consultation from any corner of the world.
The word Tara comes from a Sanskrit word - Taar or to carry over. She carries over her devotees across the Samsara Sagar or the ocean of the mundane world.
In Odisha she is known as Tara Tarini. Tara is the name of a protector. Tarini is the name of the ship in ancient India. Here she is worshipped as the goddess of the sea. She protects the boat on sea.
Let's start with a salutation to her -
तारा च तारिणी देवी नागमुण्डविभूषिता ।
Taaraa Ca Taarinnii Devi Naaga-Munndda-Vibhuussitaa |
(I meditate on Devi Tara) Tara is Tarini Devi (Who is the Goddess Who makes us cross the Samsara); Who is Naga-Munda-Vibhushita (Who is adorned with heads of demons)

Maa Tara is a collection of contradictions. She is fierce yet caring, and aggressive yet nurturing. Her complexity is exhibited in a unique way hinting at a mystery of hidden treasures she bestows upon her devotees.
She is blueskinned like the deep and enchanting evening blue skies. This means that she is boundless like the sky. She has also earned an epithet -Neel Sarswati.
She is tall with a paunch. She has one tawny braid of matted hair on her head. So, they call her Ekjata. Her consort, Akshobhya Bhairav, a fierce form of Shiva, is coiled around that jata in the form of a Naga. Her crown is made up of five human skulls beaded together. Coming down, she has three eyes. They represent her control over the past, present, and future. Her mouth has a lolling tongue with dripping blood. She is ferocious to take on evil.
Her four arms holds a holding kartrī (knife), khaḍga (sword), chamara (Fly-whisk) and indivara (lotus). The sharp weapons tell us that she will “cut off” the mundane bondages, ego, and ignorance. Some experts claim that her protruding belly may signify pregnancy.
She is wearing a tiger pelt. She is standing in the pose of pratyalidha, with left foot placed on the chest of a supine corpse. The right foot is standing between the thighs of the corpse or on a lion. The corpse can or cannot be Shiva. This denotes the domination of feminine energy over the masculine energy.
She has a thunderous laugh. Her form is terrifying and closely related to Maa Kali, another Maha Vidya. Sometimes they are called the manifestations of each other.

The most famous legend of Maa Tara is connected to the churning of the cosmic ocean. On the suggestion of Lord Vishnu, the teams of Deva and Asuras started churning the cosmic ocean with the Mandar Parvat as the churner and Vasuki naga as the rope.
Due to consistent stretching, Vasuki let out a highly fatal poison, Kaalkoot. Lord Shiva came forward to save the creation from the venom. He drank it but didn't swallow it. He stored it in his throat. His throat turned blue so he is also known as Neelkanth.
However, the heat of the Kaalkoot made Lord Shiva cry in pain. He called out to the Mother Goddess. Hearing his painful screams Devi Tara appeared and turned him into an infant. Then she breastfed Lord Shiva to nullify the effects of Kaalkoot.
Lord Shiva recuperated and the churning continued.
The second legend comes from the 17th chapter of Rudrayāmala. The Brahmrishi Vashishta Dev wanted to attain Sidhi. He started worshipping Maa Tara. But the penance bore no fruits.
Then he heard a heavenly voice asking him to meet Buddharupi Janardan or Vishnu as Buddha in Mahachin or Tibet. When Sage reached Tibet Lord Vishnu taught him to worship Maa Tara per the Kaula or Chinchara Tantric school.
Lord Vishnu asked him to meditate upon the goddess on the banks of river Dwarka in present day Birbhum in West Bengal. This place later became TaraPith.
Maharishi Vashishta attained his Siddhi. He was the first person to worship Maa Tara with intense devotion so it gave mother the name, “Vasistharadhita”
An ancient scripture Mahakaal Samhita tells the tale of the Goddess appearing on the banks of river Cholna. The mythical Cholna river flowed on the west of Meru Parvat. She came to kill the demon Hayagriva.
As she appeared on the day of Chaitra Shukla Navami, it is celebrated as her Jayanti.

Devi Ekjata is worshipped by people who wish to renounce the material world. She is the most spiritually advanced form of the Goddess.
Devi Tara is known for fighting with the “ugra” or ferocious negative forces for the upliftment of her devotees. She is worshipped to gain protection from dangers and enemies.

Mr S narrates the story of his son about his career transformation:-
My youngest son was good at academics. He was always consistent in his grades in school as well as college. He was pursuing engineering in his desired field. Everything was going as expected but suddenly everything shifted to the worse.
Despite an impressive score and interview he couldn't secure an eligible offer during placement. Unwillingly he joined the company which hired him on a lower package than his ability. But he soon realized that in spite of sweating blood, he was always overlooked at his workplace. He became hopeless and started considering quitting his job but he had no Plan B.
Then we consulted Ekktaa after the insistence of my wife's sister. Ekktaa told us that he is going through an unfavorable transit. And it will last another couple of months. And once that transit is over he will have a boost in career.
My son agreed to wait patiently and continued his job. Meanwhile Ekktaa shared some pragmatic remedies to help him deal with the negativity around him. And as she predicted, after 4.5 months, my son received an offer from one of the most reputed multinational companies with a lucrative offer.
Just one consultation with Ekktaa changed the story of my son.
Thank you Smt Ekktaa for your emotional support and on the dot prediction.
