When the world is surrounded by fear, chaos, and darkness, Lord Vishnu incarnates in different forms to protect it. This story goes back to the time when the sacred Vedas and scriptures were stolen, and the pralaya (the cosmic destruction) was about to begin. A divine fish emerged from the raging water; it was the first avatar of Lord Vishnu, called ‘Matsya Avatar.’
Koti Koti Pranaam to Lord Vishnu.
I bow with utmost respect and sincere humility as we begin with Lord Vishnu's Stotram:
शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशम्।
विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्णं शुभाङ्गम्॥
लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यम्।
वन्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम्॥
Translation:
Shantakaran Bhujgashaynam Padmanabham Suraisam.
Vishvaadhaaran Gaaganaasadarshan Meghavarnam Shubhaang.
Lakshmeekaant Kamalaanaayan Yogivardhyaanagamyam.
Vandai Vishnu Bhavabhayaharam Sarvalokaikainatham
Meaning:
I bow to Lord Vishnu, peaceful, resting on the serpent, lotus-navelled, lord of gods, sky-like, cloud-coloured, beloved of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, remover of fear.
Whenever evil rises and dharma is threatened, Lord Vishnu comes forward to restore balance. The first incarnation that Lord Vishnu took to save the world is known as Matsya Jayanti, a sacred celebration of Lord Vishnu’s first avatar, “Matsya” (a divine fish). This day holds profound spiritual and astrological significance in Hindu culture.
Matsya Jayanti occurs on Chaitra Shukla Paksha Tritiya Tithi. According to Matsya Purana, Lord Vishnu first appeared in the form of a divine fish to restore cosmic balance and protect against negative influence.
On this day, devotees perform spiritual activities to seek blessings of Lord Vishnu.
The three main pillars of cosmic power are Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. They have their individual roles to run the universe: Brahma as creator, Vishnu as protector, and Shiv as transformer.
Lord Vishnu, being the preserver and protector of the universe, is known for saving the world from evil and upholding dharma. On the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla paksha, during the month of Chaitra (March to April), Matsya avatar is a divine fish that appeared during Maha pralaya to save life on earth. This day is celebrated as Matsya Jayanti, where devotees worship Lord Vishnu and observe a fast to honour Lord Vishnu in his Matsya avatar.
Lord Vishnu’s Matsya avatar depicts his role as a preserver and protector of the universe. Every element of the Matsya avatar is exceptional and symbolic:
According to Drik Panchang, the Matsya Jayanti worship and fast will be observed on 21 st March, 2026.
Matsya Jayanti Muhurta - 13:55 to 16:20
Duration - 02 Hours 26 Mins

In Vedic astrology, Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu is associated with planet Ketu that represents spiritual learning, realization, spiritual growth and detachments.

The Tritiya tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra maas marks an important event of divine incarnation in the form of a fish to begin a new cosmic cycle.
According to Matsya Purana, during Satyuga, a king named Manu was a keen devotee of Lord Vishnu; he worshipped and showed deep penance to please Lord Vishnu.
One day when he was praying on the bank of the Kritamala River, a tiny fish appeared in his folded hands.
The king put fish in his kamandala and carried it with him. As the fish grew, the king put the fish in a pond. The fish kept growing bigger each day, while the king, Manu, put the fish in the river and then the ocean, but the fish was growing miraculously.
King Manu suspected that it's not an ordinary fish. Finally, the divine fish revealed his identity.
When the cosmic dissolution was about to come, Lord Vishnu warned King Manu and instructed him to prepare a large boat. Lord Vishnu asked King Manu to bring all the Vedic scriptures, essential seeds, Saptarishis, and all living beings to preserve life.
Before the pralaya occurred, a demon, Shankhasura (also known as shankha), stole the Vedas from Brahma and hid them deep within the ocean. Without knowledge the order of creation would collapse, and life would lose its clarity, wisdom, and direction.
In order to restore balance, Lord Vishnu decided to incarnate as the Matsya avatar.
On the day of Pralaya, as the waters rose and the world began to submerge, Lord Vishnu appeared as the divine Matsya avatar, a radiant upper body of a human with four hands, a powerful lower body of a fish, and a small horn to anchor the boat.
Matsya then entered the deep ocean, fought with the daitya Shankhasura, saved sacred knowledge and returned it to Lord Brahma.
After that, the one-horned Matsya guided King Manu to use Vasuki as a rope to tie the boat to Matsya’s horn. Just as foretold, everything was swallowed by the cosmic waters, but under Lord Vishnu’s protection, King Manu, Vedas, and all forms of life were safely preserved.
The Matsya form of Lord Vishnu is a symbol of the victory of knowledge over evil. It represents a deep symbolic meaning and spiritual message:
Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day is considered auspicious. The puja and vrat are easy to perform and can be taken by both men and women.
