“Meerabai Jayanti” is one of the most cherished Hindu festivals by the devotees of Lord Krishna, as it commemorates the divine birth of Meerabai, his ardent devotee. She has been very popular as a saint and poet in the Indian society during the Bhakti movement, inspiring millions of people. Historically, we do not find any records mentioning the birth period of Meerabai. However, the Hindu Lunar Calendar says that she was born on the highly auspicious day of Sharad Purnima. Hence, the tithi of “Meerabai Jayanti” coincides with Sharad/ Kojagiri Purnima every year.
In 2025, we are observing the 527th birth anniversary of Meerabai on the 7th of October 2025. As per “Drik Panchang”, the “tithi” for “Meerabai Jayanti” in 2025 is as mentioned below:
The Hindu Shastras mention Meerabai being born around 1498 CE in Kudki, Rajasthan, into a Rajput royal family. From her teenage years, she has been very devoted towards Shri Krishna, considering him not only a deity but her eternal husband. Let's learn about her life below in more depth.
The father of Meerabai was Ratan Singh, a royal King from Merta. During her childhood, he gifted her a small idol of Kanhaiya (Krishna). Since then, she started considering the statue as her closest companion. As she grew and became young, the connection became stronger.
Despite the fact that Meerabai belonged to a Royal Rajputana family, she was highly spiritual; found solace only in her devotion towards Lord Krishna.
She was married to the crown prince of Mewar, Bhoj Raj. But her marriage also could not stop her from continuing Bhakti for her Almighty - Sri Krishna.
Even as the queen of Mewar, she kept on worshipping Lord Krishna, considering him as her only husband. She used to compose and sing songs as a form of her dedication towards her beloved deity.
Unfortunately, Meerabai lost her father after some years of her marriage. Since then, her in-laws and society started criticising her because of her unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna. Her husband, Bhoj Raj, denied her permission to sing and dance publicly in temples, as this was considered inappropriate for Rajputana queens. She faced immense torture and disregard from society, yet nothing could shake her faith in God.
As her in-laws became unsuccessful in curbing her devotion, they even tried to poison her. There are several legends that mention this incident, elaborating how Lord Krishna saved the life of Meerabai miraculously from the venom. This incident solidified her faith even more.
After deep suffering, Meerabai finally decided to renounce her royal life and chose to become an ascetic (Saadhavi). During this period, she lived a life of simplicity and visited many sacred places dedicated to Lord Krishna, including Vrindavan, Dwarka, etc. She chose to completely surrender to the divine will, and her unwavering devotion continues to inspire countless people even today.
