As per Hindu Shastras, on "Mokshada Ekadashi", one should take care of certain things, which are as follows:
Lord Krishna narrated the story behind "Mokshada Ekadashi" to the eldest Pandava, Yudhishthira. It mentions that whosoever merely reads or listens to this Vrat Katha is blessed with immense happiness and fortune in life.
The legend is as follows:
Once upon a time, there was a kind and compassionate king named Maharaja Vaikhaanasa. He ruled over a beautiful kingdom of Champaka-Nagar. His praja always used to be happy with him as he treated them as his own children. The whole empire was the devotee of Lord Vishnu.
One night, King Vaikhaanasa had a bad dream about his father suffering in hell (narak) under the rule of Yamaraja, the Lord of Death. He was distressed by the dream and sought advice from learned Brahmins in his kingdom. They suggested that he should visit the sage Parvata Muni. Rishi was known for his deep knowledge of the past, present, and future.
As per their advice, King Vaikhaanasa visited the ashram of Parvata Muni. He mentioned his worry to him. Then, Rishi meditated and revealed that the king's father had committed a grave sin in a previous life. That’s why he is suffering in hell.
To this, the King requested a solution from the sage to liberate his father. Then, Parvata Muni advised him to observe a strict fast on the Ekadashi that comes on the Shukla Paksha of the Margashirsha month. The king diligently followed the sage's guidance. In addition to this, he also had his family observe the Ekadashi fast.
On the auspicious day of Ekadashi, King Vaikhaanasa dedicated the merits of his fast to his father. Miraculously, flowers from heaven showered upon him, and messengers of the Demi- Gods praised his father. The soul of the king's father was escorted to heaven, and in return, he blessed his son with a blessed life.
The soul of King Vaikhaanasa’s father, having traversed from hell to heavenly realms, finally reached its destination, serving Lord Vishnu. The Ekadashi observed by the king was Mokshada Ekadashi, a day that brought liberation and blessings to his family.
Similarly, if you also perform the "Mokshada Ekadashi" Vrat, you will be blessed by Lord Vishnu & receive a place in his Vaikuntha Dhaam.
