The power of devotion is divine. It emerges from faith, love, and dedication. Just as the fearless devotion of young Prahlada overcame his father’s cruelty, It invoked the boundless mercy and protective grace of the fierce yet compassionate Lord Narasimha.
Lord Narasimha’s incarnation appeared on Narasimha Jayanti. Let us explore it further, but before proceeding, let us recite Lord Narsimha’s powerful mantra for his divine blessings:
ॐ उग्रं वीरं महाविष्णुं ज्वलन्तं सर्वतोमुखम् ।
नृसिंहं भीषणं भद्रं मृत्युर्मृत्युं नमाम्यहम् ॥
Om Ugram Veeram Mahā-Vishnum Jvalantam Sarvato-Mukham
Nrisimham Bhīshanam Bhadram Mrityor Mrityum Namāmyaham
Meaning:
Om, To that form of Lord Maha-Vishnu; Which is ferocious and exhibiting great Prowess, and which is like a Blazing Fire facing all Directions. To that form of Lord Narasimha, Who is terrifying but auspicious; I bow down to that Form.
Narasimha Jayanti commemorates the appearance of Lord Narasimha, who is said to be the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of half man and half lion. Lord Vishnu's Narasimha avatar is the embodiment of righteousness, dharma and protection.
It is celebrated on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi (14th day of the bright fortnight) in Vaisakha month (gregorian calendar - April to May)
This day is regarded as one of the most auspicious and highly significant days in the Hindu Dharma. Lord Narasimha is depicted as fierce, by tearing a pillar to kill demon Hiranyakashyap, symbolising destruction of evil, hope, and victory over ignorance.

Lord Narasimha is depicted in the form of a man-lion, with multiple pairs of hands, leonine facial features and a powerful lower body, highlighting strength, and fierce energy.
Sacred symbolism of Lord Narasimha Avatar :
Lord Vishnu's manifestation as Lord Narasimha signifies that no amount of ego or arrogance can withstand divine wrath to protect righteousness.
Lord Narasimha is depicted with a lion's head and a human body. The lion's form depicts strength and power, while the human form represents compassion and intelligence.
In his different iconography, Lord Narasimha is revered through his many powerful names, each reflecting distinct divine attributes:
Hiranyakashipu was a powerful demon who observed severe penance to gain a boon from Lord Brahma.
Moved by Hiranyakashipu's devotion, Lord Brahma granted him a boon that ensured he could not be killed by man or animal, inside or outside, during day or night, or by any weapon. Empowered by this, Hiranyakashipu, filled with arrogance, called everyone to worship him.
On the other hand, Hiranyakashipu's son Prahalad was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu; he was always engaged in his worship.
Hiranyakashipu prosecuted Vishnu’s devotees and also tried to kill his own son, but Prahalad was protected by Lord Vishnu's mystical power.
One day, angered by Prahalad’s deep devotion, Hiranyakashipu questioned his son and asked, “Who is the greatest and most supreme God?” Without hesitation, Prahalad replied that Lord Vishnu is the Supreme Lord. Envious of Lord Vishnu, he enquired of his son whether his god existed within the pillar of the palace. Prahalad replied that since the Lord is omnipresent, he exists in every particle of the universe, and therefore, he is also present within the pillar. In anger, Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar with his mace. Following a tumultuous sound, the Lord Narasimha came out of the pillar in his divine incarnation of half lion and half man.
Narasimha appeared from a pillar in the demon's palace, satisfying all conditions of the boon by being Narasimha (nara – man, simha – lion), neither fully man nor beast, killing Hiranyakashipu at twilight (neither day nor night) on the threshold (neither inside nor outside), on his lap (neither earth nor space) using his claws (not a weapon). He disembowelled and killed Hiranyakasyap.
Prahalad prayed to Lord Narasimha and urged him to calm down; upon his request, he became the Somya Narasimha (peaceful form).
For decades Prahalad has been known for his bhakti. In Jyotish astrology, Prahalad’s devotion symbolises association with the planet moon, which signifies emotional clarity and divine intuition.
