In Hindu Dharma, it is believed that the circumstances of our present life are the result of the karmas performed in our previous births. The happiness, sorrows, challenges, and blessings we experience today are connected to the actions of our past.
Sometimes, the problems you face are not just coincidences. They may be the result of actions from your past life, quietly shaping your present life. During such times, faith, patience, and devotion become our greatest strengths.
For this reason, our Vedic texts highlight the significance of Papamochani Ekadashi.
Let's understand the deeper aspects of Papamochani Ekadashi. But before that, let us recite Lord Vishnu's powerful mantra to destroy past-life sins and negative karma:
||ॐ सुवर्ण बिन्दवे नमः||
||Om Suvarna Bindave Namah||
Meaning:
I offer my salutations to the One who is the source of the golden-hued divine forms.
Ekadashi observances and sacred practices are a source of spiritual and moral enrichment. The Hindu lunar month is divided into two fortnights, known as pakshas; the first fortnight, Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight), begins with the new moon, and the dark fortnight, Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), begins after the full moon and ends on the new moon.
This sacred day of Ekadashi is especially dedicated to Lord Vishnu (the preserver of the universe). According to the Vishnu Purana, when a demon tried to attack Lord Vishnu while he was resting, a divine feminine energy emerged from the Lord and killed Mura instantly.
Lord Vishnu named this divine energy “Ekadashi”, as she appeared on Ekadashi day, and he blessed his devotees with a boon that whoever observes fast on Ekadashi with devotion and faith will be freed from sins and the cycle of birth and rebirth and ultimately attain Vaikuntha (Lord Vishnu's abode).
There are 24 or 26 Ekadashi fasts in a year, and among them Papamochani Ekadashi is one of the most prominent. Our Vedic texts describe the Papamochani Ekadashi vrat as a medium of removing past karmic impressions. It is believed that by observing Papamochani fast, one gets the spiritual merit equivalent to donating a thousand cows.
According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Papamochani Ekadashi is observed during Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month (March to April) in case of purnimanta calendar and Phalguna lunar month , incase of amanta system, and it usually falls after Holi.
Papamochani Ekadashi is, as the name suggests, 'paap' meaning 'sins', since 'mochini' means 'the one who removes', symbolising the removal of sins.
Therefore, this fast is especially important for those who wish to free themselves from the karmic burden of their past and present life.
According to Hindu Dharma, one should perform their duties, whether towards family, work, or sacred responsibility, without worrying about the end result, while maintaining unwavering devotion to God.

Papamochani Ekadashi falls towards the end of the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, it will be observed on March 15, 2025. According to the Drik Panchang, the key muhurtas are as follows:
Papamochani Ekadashi on Sunday, March 15, 2026
On Parana Day, Dwadashi End Moment – 09:40

Once Dharmaraaj Yudhishthir asked Lord Vishnu, “O Lord, what is the name of that Ekadashi which can remove the sins of past lives and lessen the suffering of people?”
Lord Krishna smiled and explained that there is a sacred ekadashi that falls during the Phalguna krishna paksha. On this day, one should worship Lord Vishnu with devotion and dedication to remove sins, gain eight siddhis and move closer to the path of liberation.
Now, I shall narrate to you the legend of Papamochani Ekadashi vrat katha; listen carefully.
Long ago, there lived a king, Chitraratha (head of musicians in heaven), and many apsaras went to a forest. There were numerous sages who were enraged in meditating and performing austerities. Among them was the sage Medhavi, who was deeply absorbed in penance. An apsara named Manju Ghosa became attracted to the sage.
One day the apsara approached the sage and began singing and dancing in front of the sage. The sage, forgetting his austerities, got attracted towards her.
They began living together, and as time passed. One day, the apsara expressed her desire to return to heaven.
The sage, upon realising that he had lost many precious years of his life due to attachment.
In anger he cursed her, saying, 'You have disturbed my penance; I curse you to assume the form of a ghost in your next life.'
Upon her request for mercy, the sage advised her to observe the Papamochani Ekadashi fast to get rid of the curse.
When Medhavi Rishi returned home and confessed to his father that he had fallen from his spiritual path, his father, Chyawan Muni, also advised him to observe the Papamochani Ekadashi fast. Following this guidance, both Medhavi Rishi and Manju Ghosa observed the fast; due to the effect of the fast, their sins were destroyed, and Manjushosa got freed from pishach form, and she returned to heavenly abode.
According to Sanatan Dharma, the Ekadashi fast usually spans three days: Dashami, Ekadashi and Dwadashi. It is believed that eating a light meal on Dashami helps to remove any residual food from the body, allowing a state of purity before the fast.
