Maharishi Parashara was a great sage in the Vedic tradition and is often called the Father of Jyotish (Vedic Astrology). He wrote the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, which is the main book on predictive astrology in Sanatan Dharma.
He is also a highly respected Rishi in Hinduism and the father of Veda Vyasa. Parashara is said to have written the Vishnu Purana, but Veda Vyasa is thought to have put together and organised the Puranas, which include the Vishnu Purana.
Parashara Rishi Jayanti is a tribute to honour Maharishi Parashara for the learnings he gave to the world and his contributions to the field of Vedic astrology. According to the Hindu Panchang, we observe this occasion on the Pratipada tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Vaisakha month.
According to Drik Panchang,
As per the legends mentioned in the Hindu Puranas, Maharishi Parashara was the son of Sage Shakti and Devi Adrishyanti. Shakti Rishi was the son of the sage Vasishtha. Devi Adrishyanti was the daughter of Sage Utathya.
Let’s learn how our Jyotish Guru came into existence on the earth.
One day, Shakti Muni was crossing a narrow bridge. On his way, he met King Kalmashapada of Ayodhya, who belonged to the Ikshvaku Dynasty. Raja was riding in his chariot and left no space for Rishi Shakti to pass. Then, he asked the King very politely to let him cross the bridge. To this, Raja Kalmashapada refused and stood in his way. This made Shakti Rishi very furious. In anger, he cursed Raja to become a demon (Rakshasa).
The curse came true. After some time, the King turned into a Rakshasa. But he still kept on doing evil things. Even, he took a pledge to kill Shakti Muni and all other sons of Vasishtha Rishi. And, he did the same.
When Rishi Vasishtha got to know about this, he felt very helpless and did not want to survive any longer. He jumped from Mount Meru to end his life, but landed on soft cotton instead. Then, he tried to get burned in a forest fire but did not get any harm at all. At the end, he jumped into an overflowing river, Vipasa. But he still got saved. He also tried jumping into the river Haimavat. This river fled in several directions from his fear. Hence, it was named Satadru. ‘Satadru’ stands for ‘the river that flows in a hundred streams.’
Despite trying a lot of times, he couldn’t give up on his life. Then, he returned to his ashram. There, he found his daughter-in-law (the wife of Shakti Rishi) pregnant. This incident gave him a new hope to survive on Earth.
One day, he heard the chanting of the Vedas. He turned around to find where the echoes were coming from. But there was nobody. At that moment, Adrishyanti told him that the child in her womb was chanting the holy hymns. Later on, this divine child came to be known as Parashara. The word ‘Parashara’ means ‘enlivener of the dead.’
During the childhood of Parashara Rishi, his mother, Adrishyanti, nurtured him. Rishi Vasistha taught him the knowledge of Vedic sciences and spirituality. Later on, he was sent to the Sages Bashkal and Yajnavalkya. Under their guidance, he mastered spiritual disciplines and Vedic astrology.

“I had heard that my father had been devoured by a Rākṣasa employed by Vishwamitra: violent anger seized me, and I commenced a sacrifice for the destruction of the Rākṣasas: hundreds of them were reduced to ashes by the rite, when, as they were about to be entirely exterminated, my grandfather Vasishtha said to me:
Enough, my child; let thy wrath be appeased: the Rākṣasas are not culpable: thy father's death was the work of destiny. Anger is the passion of fools; it becometh not a wise man. By whom, it may be asked, is anyone killed? Every man reaps the consequences of his own acts.
Anger, my son, is the destruction of all that man obtains by arduous exertions, of fame, and of devout austerities; and prevents the attainment of heaven or of emancipation. The chief sages always shun wrath: be not subject to its influence, my child. Let no more of these unoffending spirits of darkness be consumed. Mercy is the might of the righteous.”

Rishi Parashara contributed a lot to the Hindu Literature by composing many ancient Indian texts. Some of them are: Vishnu Purana, Parashara Samhita, Videharaj Janaka referred to as Gita (Parashara Gita), BrihatParashara Sanhita, etc. He was also the author of Vriksha Ayurveda. It is one of the most ancient treatises on botany.
Among all his compositions, Parashara Samhita is considered the most notable. It is also called Parashara Dharma Samhita.
In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, during the discourse between Bhishma and Yudhishthira, Bhishma narrates a profound dialogue between Raja Janaka and Rishi Parashara. This is what we term the Parashara Gita.
In addition to all the literary contributions, Parashara Rishi has played an important role in the Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra). Both ancient and modern astrology are based on the principles laid down by him. This gave him the revered title of ‘Father of Vedic Astrology’/ ‘Jyotish Guru.’
In the field of astrology, he has composed BrihatParashara Hora Shastra and LaghuParasharai.
Parashara Rishi composed BPHS, BrihatParashara Hora Shastra (Sanskrit: बृहत् पराशर होरा शास्त्र. It is a foundational text of Vedic astrology. Particularly, it covers the Horā branch (predictive astrology). For example, horoscopes, dashas, etc.

It is a detailed composition of the teachings of Maharishi Parashara, which shape how an astrologer should think about life, karma, and destiny. It imparts both the skills and the duty that come with leading and guiding others.
