Early life of Sant Samarth Ramdas:

Samarth Ramdas was born to a Marathi Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin family. His parents, Suryajipant and Ranubai Thosar, were devotees of Lord Surya (a Vedic deity). He had an elder brother named Gangadhar. The early demise of his father, Suryajipant, turned him introverted and deeply absorbed in the thoughts of the divine.

According to a legend, during his wedding rituals, Ramadas swami fled from the marriage ceremony at the age of 12 after hearing the pandit chant the word 'saawadhaan'.

Devotion to Shri Ram and Hanuman

After fleeing from his wedding, he travelled hundreds of miles to a Hindu pilgrimage in Nashik and later settled in Taakli. There, he renounced all worldly attachments and dedicated his life to Prabhu Shri Rama. He then spent the next twelve years in deep spiritual practice and later installed an idol of the Lord Hanuman at Taakli (now a famous pilgrimage site). It is said that he named himself Ramdas (servant of Ram) as a form of devotion to Lord Ram.

According to sources, he acquired enlightenment at the young age of twenty four.

His works, Asmani Sultania and Para Chakra Nirupan, document his 12 years of observation. He established around 700–1200 mathas or monasteries. He constructed 11 Hanuman temples in Maharashtra, collectively known as 11 Maruti.

After becoming a Sanyasi, Sant Ramadas visited several holy places.

During his lifetime he was on a pilgrimage to India for 12 years, and during this period he saw the poor condition of people under Mughal rule. This experience awakened his political awareness.

It is also believed that he possessed supernatural powers. When he left his home, his mother lost her eyesight. After attaining enlightenment, Sant Samarth Ramdas returned to his native village. Upon meeting her, she miraculously regained her sight.
