“Saphala Ekadashi” comes during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the month Margashirsha, as per the amanta system. This sacred occasion is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. He blesses his devotees with prosperity, success, and liberation from sins on this auspicious day.
‘Saphala’ means ‘fruitful’ or ‘successful', which emphasises the immense spiritual and material rewards associated with this Ekadashi. The devotees will observe “Saphala Ekadashi” on 15th December in 2025.
Saphala Ekadashi is on Monday, December 15, 2025
Ekadashi Tithi Begins at 06:49 PM on Dec 14, 2025
Ekadashi Tithi Ends at 09:19 PM on Dec 15, 2025
One who observes this day with sincerity and dedication cleanses oneself of past sins, purifies the soul, and paves the way for salvation.
Once there lived a king named Mahishmata who ruled over the ancient kingdom of Champaavati. He worshipped Lord Vishnu with utmost devotion. But his oldest son, Lumpaka, being reckless, sinful, and driven by his indulgences, was very different from his father. He disrespected the gods, ignored his dharma, and engaged in acts of theft, cruelty, and dishonour.
When he became unable to tolerate Lumpaka’s misdeeds any longer, King Mahishmata banished him from the kingdom. Stripped of his princely privileges, Lumpaka found himself in a dense forest, shunned by society. He did not know that this forest was home to the revered peepal tree (which is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu on earth.)
He was living a miserable life in the forest. During the day, he was consuming fruits, whereas at night, he had started stealing for survival. Due to this, his body was withering day by day, making his soul more and more restless.
As winter approached, it was becoming more difficult for him to survive. One evening, he was very exhausted and hungry and could not go to steal. Hence, he slept hungry that night.
The next day, which was actually the occasion of Saphala Ekadashi, he gathered fruits and, in a rare moment of reflection, placed them under the sacred peepal tree. Even though it was done inadvertently, this small gesture was no different from offering to Lord Vishnu, as devotees customarily do on Saphala Ekadashi.
Lord Vishnu, impressed by the unconscious devotion of Lumpaka, appeared before him. The Almighty pardoned all his sins by saying, "Your offering on this sacred day, combined with your repentance, has purified your soul. Get up and take back your way to righteousness.”
This incident transformed Lumpaka completely. He went straight back to his father and apologised for all the wrongdoings. To this, the King became very happy and forgave his son. Thereafter, he taught him how to be a wise and righteous King and serve his people (praja). And, he handed over his kingdom (samrajya) to Lumpaka.
This story of “Saphala Ekadashi” teaches us that no matter how far we have strayed from the path of righteousness, sincere devotion and repentance can always lead to redemption. It also reminds us that when we acknowledge our shortcomings and seek the right guidance with a pure heart, life opens new doors to growth and transformation.
