In Hinduism, Saraswati is the Goddess of knowledge, wisdom, music, and intellect.
She is often portrayed in human form with a Veena, an indigenous stringed instrument, and riding a swan. Sometimes another two arms are added to her image, each holding a book and a rosary. She is always wearing white and is seated on a white lotus.
In some forms the swan is replaced by a peacock. Such a form of the Devi is called Neel Sarswati. Neel Saraswati is considered the tantric form of the Goddess.
As per Drik Panchang Saraswati Avahan is falling on Monday, September 29, 2025
In Hinduism Devi Aradhana is done during Navratri. We celebrate two Navratris in a year. The Chaitra Navratri which occurs during March- April. Then in the second half of the year we have Shardiya Navratri which comes during September-October.
Saraswati Avahan is performed during Shardiya Navratri. Each Navratri consists of nine nights. They are further divided into a group of 3-3-3 nights.
The first trine is dedicated to Mahakali, the Devi of Tamas tatva.
The second trine is dedicated to Mahalaxmi, the Devi of Rajas Tatva.
The final trine is dedicated to MahaSarswati the Devi of Satva Tatva.
The Navratri is a journey of the ascension of the soul from Rajas to Satva or darkness to purity.
Saraswati Avahan is the first day of the trine of the Saraswati Puja. It falls on the Shukla Saptami or seventh of the Navratri.
In Hinduism, the holy Trinity consists of, Lord Brahma- the creator, Lord Vishnu – the sustainer, and Lord Shiva- the destroyer. They work together to keep the cycle of creation/destruction going on.
During the creation of the universe, Lord Brahma found out that the entire nature was voiceless like a corpse. Pained by the lifelessness of his creation, he went to Lord Vishnu to seek his advice.
Lord Vishnu asked him to invoke Goddess Sarswati for her mercy. Lord Brahma fervently meditated on Goddess Sarswati. Pleased by the prayers of Lord Brahma, the Goddess came out from his mouth, mounted on a swan.
She tugged the strings of her Veena and the sound of “SA” /”सा” emerged. This sound became the first key of Indian melody. When the sound vibration reached earth every grain of sand and every blade of grass attained a “voice”. Amazed and thrilled by the miracle of sound, Lord Brahma called the Goddess – Vageeshwari. It means the Goddess of Vaani or voice.
