The divine power of our Hindu culture represents diverse aspects of life, including creation, knowledge, strength, protection, etc. Yet among them, Shakambari Devi stands apart as the only goddess known for providing vegetation from her own being.
When humans were close to extinction due to extreme famine, her tears became the only source of nourishment.
On Shakambari Purnima, let's unveil the divine feminine power of nourishment:
Let's start with the Devi Shakambari prayer.
|| ॐ नारायण्यै च विद्महे शाकंम भर च धीमहि तन्नो देवी प्रचोदयात ||
|| Om Narayanayai cha vidmahe shakambhara cha dhimahi tanno devi prachodaya||
Meaning : The Almighty, we know Narayana; we meditate on Shakambhari. May Goddess Shakambhari inspire us.
Shakambari Purnima is the Hindu festival celebrated in India, dedicated to the goddess Shakambari, her name itself signifies “the one who bears vegetables” - Shaka means vegetable and ambari means bearer.
It commences on Pausha Purnima, which is on the last day of Shakambari Navratri, reminding us that food, nature, and life are divine blessings, meant to be respected and preserved with gratitude.
On this day, devotees worship, pray, chant mantras of the goddess, and fast for abundance, prosperity, and overall well-being.
Unlike other Navratris, Shakambari Navratri begins on Ashtami tithi and ends on Purnima (full moon) in the Paush maas.
Devi Shakambari, also known as Devi Shatakshi and Devi Ashapuri, is the manifestation of Durga Mata. The divine form of Mahadevi is known for saving the world from drought and starvation, maintaining vegetation on earth, slaying the asura Durgamasura, and saving the Vedas from him.

Maa Satakshi appears as a radiant blue figure with hundreds of eyes; her body effuses fruits, vegetables, and herbs to restore balance on earth.
In ancient times there was a demon named Durgamasura. He performed intense penance for thousands of years to please Lord Brahma .
Impressed by his deep austerities, Lord Brahma granted him a boon. Durgamasura asked for all four Vedas.
As Lord Brahma was committed to his pledge, he granted Durgamasura the possession of all Vedas.
In the absence of the Vedas, darkness spread over the world, and all the rituals halted.
As a result, it didn't rain for a hundred years, leading to the drying of rivers, and gradually fruits, vegetables, and crops were abolished from the earth.
All of this led to starvation and distress. At that time, sages decided to invoke the divine goddess, Maa Durga.
Seeing the condition of earth, the goddess felt very sad and appeared as Shatakshi, the one with hundred eyes.
Seeing the condition around, Maa in her grief started shedding tears continuously for nine nights.
The goddess's tears turned into water, and gradually the dried river came back to life, but life could not be sustained with just water, so the sages and saints again worshipped goddess Shatakshi.
She then manifested herself in her vegetarian form known as the goddess Shakambari Devi, who produced vegetables, fruits, grains, and herbs from her own self.
This led to the restoration of cosmic balance, life, and vegetation on earth.
The Goddess then manifested two of her sacred forms, Bhima and Bhramari. They fought the demon Durgmasura and defeated him.
Later they retrieved the four vedas and handed them over to Lord Brahma for restoration.
When Kaliyuga started, Goddess Shakambari appeared in the form of a Pindi at the Siddha Peeth temple in Saharanpur.
This day is celebrated as Maa Shakambari Purnima, the goddess of nourishment, vegetation, and abundance.
Even today, there is a belief that if anyone donates shaka, fruits, vegetables, or grains in this temple and makes any wish, the goddess fulfills it.

Guided by Ekktaa’s journey of learning, research and wisdom, Ekktaa shares sacred insights on the auspicious occasion of Shakambari Purnima. Shakambari Pournima, celebrated on the full moon of Paush month, marks this day of profound importance. However, Paush Maas is closely associated with Lord Surya.
To acquire deeper awareness, let us understand why the Paush maas is linked to Surya, the Sun God:
Paush is considered the sacred month of the Sun God, where Surya Devata is regarded as the principal deity of the month. Paush is observed during the winter season, when the sun's rays are nourishing and important for life.
Spiritually, this time of the year signifies the Uttarayaan period ( marks sun’s northward journey), signifying growth and divine grace. Devotees indulge in many spiritual activities, along with charity, worship, and mantra chanting, performing Surya arghya during Brahma muhurta, which has deep spiritual importance.
The full moon is considered highly auspicious in Hindu Dharma because it represents time for receiving divine blessings, spiritual enlightenment and karmic cleansing.
We can therefore conclude that Paush Maas honours Surya Devata as the source of light and consciousness, guiding us to live in alignment with the sacred rhythm of creation.
