Shani Jayanti 2026: Karma, Discipline and the Role of Astrology Consultation

What if the planet you fear the most… is your greatest teacher?

No matter how many times you ask, rush, or worry, you may not receive results easily due to Lord Shani's influence.

On the sacred occasion of Shani Jayanti, we honour the powerful presence of Lord Shani, the divine dispenser of Karma. Shani is the planet of justice. He doesn’t punish without reason. He only serves us the consequences of our actions, helping us gain higher wisdom, strength and resilience.

Let us offer our prayers to Lord Shani by reciting this powerful mantra:

नम: कृष्णाय नीलाय शितिकण्ठनिभाय च।नम: कालाग्निरूपाय कृतान्ताय च वै नम:

Namah Krishṇāya Nīlāya Shitikanṭha-nibhāya cha. Namah Kālāgni-rūpāya Kṛtāntāya cha vai namah

Meaning: I offer my salutations to Shani Dev, who's appearance is bluish in colour like shree Krishna. Shani Dev is the form of Kalagni (destructive fire) and Kritanta (Yamaraja/ God of death) for this world.

Introduction

Shani Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Shani, a revered Hindu deity in Sanatan Dharma. Lord Shani is worshipped as the presiding deity of the planet Saturn, owning a strong influence in Vedic astrology.

Shani Jayanti is believed to be an exceptionally powerful day. It is a rare and sacred occasion observed on Jyestha Krishna Amavasya. On this day devotees worship Lord Shani dev to seek blessings for success and discipline and relief from the negative impacts of past karmas.

About Shani Dev: The God of Karma

Lord Shani is the revered Hindu deity of justice and karma and is believed to deliver outcomes according to a person's deeds, actions and discipline. He is the son of Lord Surya and Chaya (the shadow form who stood in for Surya's first wife, Saranyu).

According to Vedic texts, Lord Shani has two wives, Neelima and Dhamini (Manda). Neelima is a gentle goddess who eases the fierce energy of Shani Dev. Many devotees worship Neelima along with Shani Dev.

Dhamini, is the daughter of a Gandharva, once cursed Lord Shani because he disregarded her while performing meditation. As a result, she cursed him that his gaze would bring misfortune, leading him to keep his eyes downward.

Iconography of Lord Shani

  • Lord Shani is depicted with a dark blue complexion.
  • He is considered powerful, intense and irascible.
  • His mount is a black crow or vulture, representing expiation of bad karma.
  • In his iconography he is holding two swords, a trident, an axe and a bow.

In Jyotish astrology, the planet Saturn is governed by Lord Shani. Lord Shani also has the authority of wealth, misery, longevity, delays, ambition, progress, success, health, discipline, intellect and also death.

The Legend of Lord Shani

According to Vedic texts, Surya Dev's first wife, Sanjana, was unable to bear the intense heat of Lord Surya. To seek the strength of enduring his heat, she left for the forest to perform penance. Before leaving, she created her shadow form, Chhaya (the goddess of shadow), to perform the responsibilities of a wife and mother in her place.

Unaware of the truth, Lord Surya continued living with Chaya. After some time, Surya and Chahya were blessed with a son, Shani, who inherited Chaya's dark complexion. Due to the difference in colour, Surya Dev became angry and questioned Chaya's loyalty. However, Devi Chaya was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. At that moment, Lord Shiva himself appeared and revealed the truth behind the situation.

When Sanjana eventually returned, Surya Dev rejected Chaya and her son. Deeply hurt and humiliated by this betrayal, Lord Shani Dev performed intense penance to Lord Shiva.

Pleased by his devotion and dedication Lord Shiva blessed Shani Deva and appointed him as the God of justice and karma.

Astrological Significance in Vedic Astrology

Lord Shani is the presiding deity of the planet Saturn in Vedic astrology, symbolising justice, karma and balancing life.

Mitigating negative Saturn influence:

Lord Shani's malefic planetary influence is believed to bring intense challenges, hardships, delays, disappointments and hopelessness.

Performing remedies associated with Lord Shani helps a person develop humility, selflessness and patience. It leads to detachment, which in turn guides people towards spiritual enlightenment, truth and self-awareness.

Understanding Shani’s Energy:

Repeated delays, laziness, stagnation, or obstacles in life are often considered signs of an imbalance in Shani’s energy. Shani's energy is associated with achieving long-term success. Therefore, during such phases, one is advised to let go of ego, focus on discipline, dedication, responsibility, and emotional stability.

Role of Shani in Birth Chart

In jyotish astrology, Shani's influence in a birth chart can be favourable or unfavourable depending on its placement. When benefic, Shani bestows an individual with wisdom, wealth, success and leadership qualities and when weakly placed or during periods such as Shani Dasha or Shani Sade Sati, life may enter a phase of karmic testing.

Saturn's influence in the birth chart is not always negative, rather, it brings lessons related to discipline, responsibility, patience, and delayed results that ultimately leads to long-term stability. These periods are often believed to be a time for inner growth, self-awareness and becoming more mature and disciplined in life.

Vedic Wisdom

Some journeys are not for instant success. They are for building strength, patience, discipline and lasting achievements over a period of time. Ekktaa shares her perspective, rooted in Vedic astrology, on how Saturn in an Upachaya house often reflects a slow but steady rise.

Saturn in Upachaya Houses – The Slow Rise That Lasts

Saturn gets a negative reputation. But place him in the Upachaya houses – the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th – and he becomes your greatest ally.

Why? Because "Upachaya" means "growth". And Saturn loves slow, steady growth.

In the 3rd, he builds courage through struggle. In the 6th, he crushes competition quietly. On the 10th, he hands you authority, but only after you've earned it.

In the 11th, he delivers gains that don't disappear overnight.

Saturn doesn't give shortcuts. He gives foundations. The people who win long-term in career, finances, and reputation? Most of them have Saturn working hard in an Upachaya house.
