Hindu cosmology follows an infinite pattern of a Yuga cycle. Each cycle lasts for 4.32 million human years. A Yuga cycle consists of four cosmic ages (Yugas). They are Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali Yugas. We call the second age (or Yuga) “Treta Yuga.”
According to the Hindu Lunar Calendar, “Treta Yuga” started on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Vaishakha month. This tithi coincides with “Akshaya Tritiya.” Hence, we observe “Treta Yuga Diwas” every year on the same tithi to mark the beginning of the second cosmic age.
This year, we are commemorating “Treta Yuga Diwas” on 19th April 2026.
After the end of Satya Yuga, “Treta Yuga” starts as the dawn of a new age. It lasts for 1,296,000 years, which is equal to 3600 divine years.
In Sanskrit, “Treta Yuga” means ‘the age of three or triads’, which has the following significance:

The Mahabharata, Manusmriti, Surya Siddhanta, Vishnu Smriti, and many Puranas mention the importance of the Treta Yuga. It was during the Treta Yuga itself when Ramayana, one of the greatest epics of Hindu tradition, actually happened.
Lord Vishnu appeared in his 7th avatar of Lord Rama in this Yuga. His sole aim was to restore balance and bring Dharma back to earth. He was born to Raja Dasharatha and Rani Kaushalya of Ayodhya.
The Ramayana mentions the whole life and journey of Prabhu Ram, starting from his birth. The Vedic texts mention that it was composed by Rishi Valmiki. That’s why we also know it by the name “Valmiki Ramayana.”
It is one of the largest ancient epics in world literature. It consists of nearly 24,000 shlokas (verses). They are divided into seven kāṇḍa (chapters).
As the Ramayana says, the reign of Shri Ram was purely an era of Dharma. During that time, there was utmost importance of keeping promises. Bhagavad Gita also mentions the essence of Treta Yuga in the following lines:
| Doha | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ॥ रघुकुल रीति सदा चली आई, प्राण जाए पर वचन न जाई ॥ |
The tradition of the Raghu dynasty (the rule of Prabhu Ram) has always been this: One may give up their life, but never break their word (promise). |
Shri Ram, known as Maryada Purushottam, was married to Mata Sita, revered as Pativrata Shiromani. The Puranas mention the divine couple as the embodiment of purity, devotion, and sacrifice.

During the reign of the Treta Yuga, people chose righteousness (Dharma) consciously despite imperfect circumstances in life. That’s why good always prevailed over evil. And, there is no higher power than Shri Rama to learn how to choose Dharma, live Dharma, and be Dharma.
From the life of Shri Rama, we get to learn how important it is to honour our promises and responsibilities. Regardless of personal hardship, he held only himself accountable for everything that happened to him.
Just like Lord Rama upheld his duties without hesitation, we too can build trust and respect in our lives by being reliable, honest, and consistent in our actions.
Today, we live in a world that is full of pressure and distractions. And at times, this leads to overwhelming emotions, and ultimately, we are not able to make the right decisions. We tend to lose our inner wisdom in such situations.
Treta Yuga is a true reminder of how to balance our feelings with thoughtful understanding. For example, Prabhu Rama chose patience and peace when he got to know that Rani Kaikeyi, whom he considered not less than his own mother, wanted him to go into exile.
Many similar instances from his life remind us that instead of acting impulsively, we should pause, reflect, and respond with clarity. This balance helps us maintain peace of mind, make better choices, and handle conflicts with maturity.
In the Kali Yuga, we have somehow got lost in the pursuit of our personal desires. We are all only looking to make our lives comfortable, even if sometimes it means choosing the wrong path.
The age of Dharma guides us that our true character is revealed when we prioritise what is right over what is easy. When we rise above personal desires and act with responsibility, we align ourselves with a higher purpose.
One of the most important lessons we can learn from the Treta Yuga is to understand one’s true self and live a life aligned with Dharma. Self-awareness allows us to recognise our strengths, weaknesses, and life purpose.

Yes, the second cosmic age of the Yuga cycle, i.e. Treta Yuga, is related to Prabhu Shri Ram. It was during this Yuga that Lord Vishnu took his 7th avatar as Maryada Purushottam.
After defeating Lanka Pati Ravana, Shri Ram ruled over Ayodhya for 11,000 years. After this, when the soul of Prabhu Ram departed from the earth towards Vaikuntha Dhaam, the Treta Yuga ended.
