Fasting and spiritual practices are meant to connect with higher energy and to overcome the difficulties in one's life. According to our Vedic texts, one such sacred observance is the auspicious fast known as Varuthini Ekadashi, which allows devotees to cleanse themselves of past life sins, overcome misfortunes, and attain peace, prosperity, and ultimate liberation (moksha).
On the auspicious occasion of Varuthini Ekadashi, Ekktaa, a professional astrologer, guides us on how to observe this vrat in the most spiritually fulfilling way.
Let us begin with the chanting of a powerful mantra of Lord Vishnu’s Vamana Avatara.

Varuthini Ekadashi is one of the auspicious days in Hindu dharma which is observed on the 11th lunar day of the fortnight of Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra (April to May).
Varuthini is derived from a Sanskrit word which means 'shielded', or 'protected', representing the protection gained through spiritual practices and fasting. This fast is believed to shield devotees from negative influences and align them with higher consciousness. On this day, Lord Vishnu's 5th Avatar Vamana is revered by devotees.
Ekadashi is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. In Hindu Dharma, He is considered the preserver of the universe.
According to Bhavishya Purana, once Lord Vishnu was resting inside a cave now known as Badrinath. While he was resting, a demon named Mura found him and moved forward to attack him.
At that very moment a divine energy emerged from Lord Vishnu. This fierce divine energy instantly destroyed Mura. Pleased to see her strength, Lord Vishnu declared that anyone who observes the fast of Ekadashi with complete devotion, sincerity and dedication will be freed from sins and sufferings and will be blessed with prosperity, happiness and spiritual enlightenment. Ultimately, they will attain vaikunta.
According to Drik Panchang, this year Varuthini Ekadashi will be celebrated on Monday, April 13, 2026.
On 14th Apr, Paraná Time - 06:54 to 08:49.
On Parana Day Hari Vasara End Moment – 06:54.

According to Bhavishya Purana, during a time of exile (Agyantvas), Yudhishthra found himself surrounded by uncertainty and deep suffering. Troubled to find a way out, Yudhishthra asked.
Hey Krishna, is there a sacred path of vrat that can protect us from evil forces and guide us towards good fortune and peace?
After listening to his concern, he recites the story of Varuthini Ekadashi:
In ancient times, there lived a renowned king, Madanta, who ruled on the bank of the sacred river Narmada. He was known for his devotion, generosity, truthfulness and spirituality. One day, he went to the jungle to perform penance, while he was deeply immersed in the worship of Lord Vishnu, a bear suddenly attacked him from behind.
The king Madanta was very frightened, but he kept praying to Lord Vishnu and stuck with the ascetics of the religion. Hearing his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his chakra.
However, by then, The king suffered severe injuries, his leg was severely damaged. Seeing Madanta in deep sorrow and pain, Lord Vishnu explained to him that the physical pain he is going through now is due to his previous life's sin. Lord Vishnu advised him to observe Varuthini Ekadashi and worship his Vamana incarnation to get rid of negative influence and achieve wellbeing in life.
King Madanta followed Lord Vishnu's instructions, he observed the Varuthini Ekadashi's fast and worshipped the Vamana Avatar with dedication. As a result, his injured leg was miraculously restored to its original state.
With time all his sufferings were removed, and he was blessed with abundance, good fortune and peace. In the end, he attained Lord Vishnu's divine abode.

Ekadashi is more than just a spiritual practice; it deeply influences our body, mind and soul in powerful ways.
During the 11th lunar day of both waxing and waning phases, the influence of the moon is believed to be at its peak, affecting the water element within our body, which indirectly affects our mind and emotions, causing emotional disturbance, distress, decrease in mental clarity, depression and anxiety.
By observing Ekadashi fast, a person can remove the negative effects of an afflicted moon in their birth chart.
When we practise fasting, our focus naturally shifts towards inner stillness. This practice not only detoxifies the body but also purifies the mind and soul. Fasting reduces excessive focus on physical pleasures, which helps people focus more on meditation and devotion.

Varuthini Ekadashi falls on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of the Chaitra month, the exact tithi, according to the Bhavishya Purana, on which Lord Vishnu manifested as the Vamana avatar, also known as Trivikrama (three-legged).
This day does not merely honour Vamana. It commemorates his very appearance on earth.
King Bali was performing the Vishwajit Yajna, a sacrifice granting him unstoppable cosmic power. The devas, fearing his dominance, approached Vishnu.
It was on this Ekadashi that Vishnu descended as the dwarf Brahmin boy, born to Aditi and Kashyapa, and walked into Bali's yajna bhumi to destroy the arrogance of King Bali and restore dharmic order.
Varuthini Ekadashi is not just a day to remember Vamana. It is a day to become Bali — a moment to surrender ego and realise the following:
"This was never mine to begin with.”
The avatar descends once. The invitation is offered every year.
